Ideas for songs for CD favors?

We are making CD favors for our guests.  My computer does that LightScribe metallic etching, so we are going to put our names, dates, and maybe a picture on the front.  It takes my computer about 20 minutes to do just one CD, and with 400 guests.. I need to start soon!

I have kinda weird taste in music, and I want the CD to appeal to everyone. We want it to be love songs, but all sorts of different sounds and genres.

Help me pick out some good songs?

Honestly, I think you are wasting your time and money with these. Most people won't even take a favor that isn't edible, or if they do, they'll throw it away when they get home, or it will sit in their junk pile for a while until they feel less guilty about throwing it away. I think your idea is well intentioned, but not practical. The best favors will always be edible--some kind of fancy chocolates, cookies, or even M&Ms in your wedding color. Good luck.

While I actually really disagree with EmilyKathleen on almost all points (I think edible favors are usually really dumb and would be quite excited to get a CD instead) I would urge against this idea as well.

I had actually wanted to do this same thing until something dawned on me... the whole idea is illegal.

Making and distributing mix CDs (for profit or not) is against copyright law unless you're actually buying the rights to distribute each song. I think that back in the days of cassettes, it was only illegal if you sold your mixes for profit... but it's actually stricter now with CDs... primarily because you lose less quality when copying a CD than you do with a cassette.

ETA: I don't mean to be judgmental, though. If you want to do it, and are sure none of your guests will be appalled... go ahead and do it. I just didn't want to chance it with the large number of lawyers in my family ;-)

Haha, wow.. I never even thought of it being illegal!  Thanks for bringing that up, its for sure something to think about.  Dang.. I really loved this idea.  Its the first thing my FI got excited about besides actually being married.

I don't want edible favors, I don't know.. I just don't.  I know those are super popular these days, and we are having a candy bar, so I guess that could be considered our favors.   I agree that most are pretty stupid, which is why I got so excited about the CD!

    Lame.  Now I'm sad.

I personally wouldn't do it either. I think that 8000 hours is WAY more time than I would want to spend on making favors. My cousin gave everyone in the wedding party a CD and I honestly listened to it once. I like food favors personally, we're making fudge for ours, but if it's worth it to you, more power to you.

To answer your question about ideas for songs:
    You and Me - Lifehouse
    1,2,3,4 - Plain White Tees
    Dear Bobbie - Yellowcard
    500 Miles - The Proclaimers
    My Best Friend - Weezer

All from the same genre, but some of my favorite love type songs. Good luck with what you choose!

    Hehe, you mean 8000 minutes?  ;)  I wouldn't spend 8000 hours either.

Oops, yes that's what I meant, either way though I don't think I'd do it. 8000 minutes = 133 hours that you could spend NOT doing wedding things. That's a lot of time. Sorry for the typo!

I personally wouldn't do a CD, either, and not just because it's illegal.  CDs I get from people and don't seek out for myself rarely ever get listened to, except maybe once in the car.  Also, I'm a freak who doesn't like love songs as a rule, probably because there are very few love songs in metal or by Pink Floyd.  I'd just worry that your effort would be wasted and you'd go to jail.

I thought 1,2,3,4 was by Fiest.  Did Plain White Tees do a song with that name, too?

I don't like most favor ideas either so I feel your pain about t.... and hardly remember them from weddings.   Instead of having something at everyones place setting, we are considering the photo strips from our photo booth out guests "favors" Even if they don't appreciate them, I know I will love looking at all the pics after the wedding!

Don't know if you had thought about doing a photo booth at all, just a suggestion!  I also think you could just consider the candy bar your "favor" as well!

    GL!

Yep, making a cd of your favorite tunes to give away vioates copyright law whether or not you make any money from it.  Those old cassette mix tapes were illegal, too.  It's just gotten more attention now because it's so easy to mass-produce cds.  There might be some loop-holes about making one copy for your own back-up purposes, but that's it.  We went to a wedding that gave out a cd of love songs and I thought, "gee thanks for bootlegged copy of some super-sappy love songs."  I never listened to it.
