March 2012 Weddings

XP: fly first class?

I also posted this on the vegas board.

So I'm going to be flying to Vegas for a work conference prior to the wedding, so I'm only flying one way (we are leaving from Vegas for the HM following the wedding and FI is joining me midweek).  Anyways I'm flying by myself, there may be some people from work that I don't necessarily work (but work for the same company) with that might be on the same flight.

I've never flown first class, or even thought about it.  But I thought it might be nice because I'm going to be carrying my dress on the plan and then I'll almost be guaranteed a spot in the coat closet for it if I'm first class.... But I don't know would you side eye a co-worker for flying first class (even though I would be paying for the upgrade?)???

Its literally only 79$ more, and with opening their credit card you get a 50$ statement credit so it would really only be 29$ - I think is TOTALLY worth it.  Just don't want to make myself out to look like a complete jacka$$.....

ETA:  I'm not even sure if anyone would be on the same flight as me - I know that most of the people are going earlier and def are not on the same one but there are some people taht I don't really talk to that may be on the same flight.

  • I'm also going to Vegas for a work conference before the wedding!  But we're driving.

ANYWAY, do the upgrade!  First class is fun.  You get free drinks, hot towels, better food, bigger seats, etc.  And the added bonus of putting your dress in the closet is worth it.  I've only flown first class/business class a handful of times but it does make the flight more enjoyable.  Once we were grounded due to a disruptive passenger getting kicked off the flight for FOUR HOURS.  But the liquor was flowing freely in first class and we had an awesome flight attendant making jokes and keeping spirits high.  When I realized after the second hour that I'd be missing my connecting flight he was on the phone trying to find me another flight (which I also ended up missing as the hold up went two more hours).

The hidden bonus  discovered on that trip is that if you miss your flight and need to stay in a hotel overnight, you get a 4 star hotel for the night.  It *almost* made up for the fact that I was missing my first night in Aruba.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

  • I know I really really REALLY want to do it.  But I'm just nervous that I end up flying with someone that I work with and they side eye me - even though I'm only flying one way and it is wayy cheaper than their round trip ticket.... I just feel kind of like weird about it.

  • Maybe its just my work environment, but I totally wouldn't give two fuux about my coworkers thinking I'm a tool if I'm A.) paying for the upgrade myself (though if my bosses offered to pay for it, I wouldn't care either, lol) B.) It's a huge monumental experience I'm going through. I totally think if THEY think you're tool, then they must be an even bigger one. :)

    Go for it!

    Yup! :)
  • Same here.  Screw what my co-workers think!

Although... since FI and my best friend are my only two co-workers I would feel really bad flying first class and sticking them in coach!  But if I worked in a normal office... screw 'em!

  • Do the upgrade but make sure you put it on your own credit card, not work's... that's the only thing I would side-eye a co-worker for.

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • I would do the upgrade if I were you.  Plus, if you are checking luggage, it might pay for itself.  If anyone asks, I would just explain that it just made since with your dress and what not.  I'm sure its no big deal though.1`

I agree with this. I'd definitely do the upgrade though for the simple fact of having the dress. It's really not that much more cost wise and so much more worth it! :)

I have to pay for all my expenses on my own credit card and fill out an expense report...So i was just going to expense back the amount of the ticket and I will just pay for the upgrade.

BUT thanks for the responses and for making me feel better about taking an upgrade that I wouldn't have done otherwise :)  Now to book it!!!!!

  • DItto PP. The $29 is worth protecting the dress alone.
