Thailand HM - island hopping

Hello!

FI and I are very excited about the prospects of a HM in Thailand and I am actively researching it. I have seen some package deals that sound amazing but are more expensive and I think I can build the same itinerary on my own. We were thinking for going to Phuket (or Koh Samui), Phi Phi Island, and Krabi but I'm wondering how to get from island to islands.

I see that there are ferries and some people advise that the ferries be booked in advance while others say to just by the ticket when I get there. Not having things set up in advance makes me nervous but if anyone has been to Thailand and has used the ferries I'd love to hear more about how they work.

We are going in mid-late June next year.

Thanks!

Re: Thailand HM - island hopping

  • Let me know what you find out, we are also thinking of Southern Thailand in April 2013.
  • My FI and I went to Thailand last Spring and it was AMAZING!!!!! We went for 2 weeks and are planning to go back after the wedding/honeymoon and once we save up a bit of money.

It was a true lifetime experience and we planned our own itinerary. We had originally planned to go to various islands but there was a massive flood when we went (april 2011) so we had a slight change of plan and only went to 1. Having said that, it is very easy to do your own thing and not be part of a group.

    Have a great great time!!!!
  • I sure hope it doesn't flood when we are there! that would really suck. Were you able to have a good time despite the flood? Where diod you stay and do you have any recommendations?

  • Have you been reading any news related to Thailand? They have been having lots of flooding....even mainland....this is not to say that it won't be okay when you plan on going but make sure to read the news too and not just travel websites about going there!!

It was the trip of a lifetime even though we didn't make it to Phuket island or Samui.

Do you only want to do island stuff or will you be staying in Bangkok and other cities as well?

H and I have been to Thailand four times. In fact, he asked me out on the island of Phuket!

TBH, Phuket wasn't my favorite, although I think it can be nice if you keep your distance from the most high-traffic beaches.  The island has its own airport, and you can easily access Koh Phi Phi from there, either for a day trip (which is what we did) or for a longer stay on Phi Phi.  Taking a boat tour around Phi Phi is super relaxing, and the snorkeling in that area is otherworldly!

We also liked Samui, another island with its own airport.  Samui is much larger than Phuket; you could tour it for a week, easily.  We've also spent time in BKK and Chiang Mai.

Make sure to try the mango sticky rice.  It is de-lish.
  • I am SOOO excited to read that all of you brides have done/planning on going to Thailand as well! My FI and I are going next November and are planning on island hopping too! We plan to go to Phuket, Phi Phi Don, and Krabi! I think the best way is the ferries between the islands. My FI has been to Thailand and he says it is okay to wait and get your tickets once your there. Shoot some of our flights we will only book a day or two in advance. We are also going to go up to Chiang Mai (northern Thailand) for a few days and do a jungle trek and swim with dolphins. Let me know if you have any questions/suggestions. My FI is a master planner when it comes to traveling, he has done a ton of it.

    Happy Honeymooning!
  • Mrs. Ting, now I want mangos with sticky rice.  If only I knew where to get it in Florida.
  • Not sure if you're still checking this thread, but we just returned from two weeks in Thailand earlier today. We LOVED our time in Krabi - we stayed at the Tubkaak, and it would be an amazing honeymoon hotel. It's a small boutique resort on a quiet, gorgeous beach with a perfect view of the Hong Islands. Great rooms, pool, beach, service, food - I can't find a single fault with the place. We did a day trip to the Phi Phis and found it to be an incredible letdown. It was absolute mayhem with all of the tourist boats. If I could do it over again, I'd skip the speedboat tour to the Phi Phis, pay half the price to rent a private longtail boat with a driver and go to the Hongs.
