Hosting own wedding--Do we give a quick speech?

My FI and I have been going back and forth on this. I thought that it would be nice to get on the microphone after the toasts and quickly say thank you to the guests for coming. Then, a family friend would say grace, and dinner would be served. We are hosting the wedding ourselves, so our parents aren't planning on making any speeches.

My FI thinks that because we are having a receiving line at the start of the reception and will be saying thank you to people then, saying it again after the toast would be strange/repetitive. Also, he thinks it's strange to give a speech at your own wedding.

I can't see your poll so I'm just going to answer you here. I think its nice but not required. I have never been to a wedding where the hosts gave a speech, but I do know from theknot that many weddings do include this element.

Traditionally this would have been something done by the FOB, as he'd be the host, but if he's not I think it's perfectly appropriate to say a few words of welcome and thanks. Keep it very short. I wouldn't find this at all strange.

It's also likely not necessary to do so, so if you don't want to, I think it can be easily avoided.

One of the weddings I worked had a quick speech after the toasts. It was under 2 minutes and very heartfelt by the groom. It's the only thing I really remembered from that wedding, but quite honestly after working hundreds of them, it's one of my favorite moments I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. It was very sweet and unexpected.

That's what we did. I know traditionally the father of the bride would do so since usually they are hosting. My parents did contribute financially to our wedding, but we planned the whole thing & considered it like we were the hosts. We don't do toasts in our faith, so none of that. Right after the dances, but before the prayer, we said a quick (2min) thank you to everyone. It felt good to get it out of the way early. We also had a receiving line at the ceremony.

I never heard of the B&G doing a toast but I really like the idea of it. I've been to weddings where they dont make it to all the tables for one reason or another, and a toast or speech would be nice

We hosted our own wedding and H gave a quick toast. He didn't have anything prepared, just a quick thanks to everyone for coming, a special acknowledgement of his mom's and cousin's birthdays, and then a quick toast. We still did table visits after dinner to thank each guest personally, but it was a nice touch to say a general thanks.

I think even though our parents are contributing to our wedding, we will give a quick thank you. I think it is the right thing to do, to thank all of these people for coming. It doesn't have to be a long toast or speech, but you are the two that everyone knows and you should say something.

We hosted our own wedding and gave a quick speech thanking people for supporting us by being there to help us celebrate, additionally thanking family/friends who did specific things to make the day as awesome as it was.
