Hmmm, the possibility of dying doesn't really scare me, but my luck is bad enough that I'd be in that 1% that doesn't win the money. However, I'd probably buy a ticket.

Yes, I would. According to stats around here, I have a higher chance of getting hit by a car crossing the street to go to work than I do of dying with that lottery ticket. At least I could live stress free finance wise for awhile!

Yes...if someone told me surgery to make my life better had a 99% chance of success and a 1% chance of failure, I'd do it, so why not?

If you would have asked me that 2 years ago, I may have said yes. I was on the verge of bankruptcy and the idea of being able to set my family straight would have been very appealing.

Then after being the victim of an attempted murder, I realize money is just pretty paper. One extra day with my kids is worth more than any amount of money - even if at only 1% risk. They need a mom a lot more than I need a clean credit report.

Probably not.. it's not enough money. If it was like $10 million, I might. It would also depend how I would die. If it was going to be a horrible, painful death, then I'm not sure, but if I was just going to randomly drop dead with no pain, then yeah, $10 million would be worth that small risk, but $1 million wouldn't be... I don't think a million dollars is really enough to change my life beyond just making things a lot more comfortable. It's not like we could quit our jobs and never work again. Especially if taxes are taken out.

ETA - If I had kids, no amount of money would be worth the risk.

I was 2 days away from having my divorce final with my ex-. He wouldn't accept it (even though it was his idea 2 years earlier). He beat the tar out of me and strangled me to the point of blacking out. Had my kids not heard me screaming, I would have been gone. He let go long enough to tell them to go back to bed. I regained consciousness and ran for the neighbors.

$1 million isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things. Do I get the entire sum, or is a good chunk taken away for taxes? If I got it all, then sure. I mean, there's probably a greater chance of me dying on any given day due to other factors beyond my control, so what's 1%?

I'm in the "I don't think 1 million is quite enough" group. Even if it were say 3 or 4 million you could live on the interest of that fairly easily and then have something to leave for your kids someday.

I agree that if I had kids I would not buy the ticket. Ironically, part of the reason I would buy it now is because I have baby fever big time and the million dollars would put us in a place financially where I would feel comfortable getting pregnant.

We've gone through a lot of counseling over the past 2 years, but it's a MUCH better place. FI is amazing. My kids are finally happy and not scared of their own shadow anymore. I know this sounds really cold and horrible, but it was a really good day in retrospect. He was an incredibly abusive man, and he's gone now...he can't hurt us ever again.
