QOTD 2/22

What was the worst job you've ever had and why was it so bad?

Re: QOTD 2/22

  • Cleaning job. I was 14 so I was limited on what I could do. During the summer I cleaned the apartment above their office. The people trashed it so bad and it was so hot. Once the school year started I cleaned a bank (vacuum, dust) so that was much better

My last job... I hated it. The actually job was great, but my boss was the most unethical, immoral man I have ever met. I am so glad to be out of there.

  • My last job was probably the worst. I worked for a narcissist surgeon who always put people down and was never pleased with anyone's work. He would put people down in staff meetings and bring several people to tears (me included). My current boss has heard of him (orthopedic world is a small world) and said if I can work for him, I can work for anyone.

  • I've only had 4 jobs... and "The Rainforest Cafe" was by far the worst!!! The managers had no control over anything, they just ran around like chickens with their heads cut off and got nothing accomplished.
  • Kroger. POS managers.
Otherwise, working at a mexican restaurant in 10th grade. I got hit on ALL the time for being the cute blonde with the butt in the front. haha.

  • I worked at a major tourist attraction in the area and my mom was diagnosed with cancer in the middle of the summer. I had to leave work early one day to pick her up from the hospital and a manager told me I was using my mom's illness as an excuse to leave work. I cried.

  • My last job.  I loved what I did but one particular lady in my group was horrible.  She made me leave work in tears daily.  She was so mean to me and clearly went out of her way to make things as hard for me as possible.  I went to my boss at least 4 times but he was so passive agressive nothing ever changed.  It became the joke throughout OTHER groups because she treated me so badly and my boss turned a blind eye.

  • All of my jobs have been pretty good, that being said, the worst one was a Cart Pusher (Whore) at Thriftway. I was there for a year and a half, when it closed, without being promoted because I was really good at getting carts, bagging and cleaning. What that really meant is that all of the other lazy guys they hired for it refused to go outside in the snow, rain or heat to get carts often enough.

This next part is not for the easily queasy. Seriously.

I had to clean a really nasty mess in the women's bathroom. Someone had taken a massive dump in their underwear, taken them off and laid them on the floor of the handicapped stall. Some of it had obviously fallen out of the underwear and was on the floor. The toilet was a disaster area. Next door in the other stall, someone had gotten poop all over the walls.

I've never washed my hands so much in my life, or worn as many gloves at once.

One of my co-ops. Things started out fine but then I started getting bored. It was also when I decided that I did not want to do design work. My last co-op (which turned into the job I have now) is perfect for me. ETA: actually, my food service job on campus was pretty awful. I'd leave work all sweaty and smelling like a gross mixture of food. I'd have to wear a hat the rest of the day. Also, Midge, that's so gross!!

  • My first job in TV was an assistant to an executive producer/owner of a small production company. He was SO CHEAP that he refused to pay to put his car in a garage, so I had to go down to feed the meter EVERY HOUR so he wouldn't get a parking ticket. And we had the slowest elevators so it took 15 minutes out of every hour just to feed the stupid meter. But the worst part was he was a painkiller addict (in denial) and all I did was lie for him. In the 13 months I worked there, he came into work less than 10 times. The other days he would send a different excuse around noon as to why he couldn't be in today. It was almost impressive that he could find a new ailment for his dog or his roof or his wife every day.

He totally destroyed the last project the company had so after I got my paycheck I just sent an email saying I quit and left.

  • I put myself through grad school working as a manager at McDonalds. I really enjoyed it there. So when I moved to Texas, I thought I would start off working at McDonalds until I found something else. This store was nothing like my other store. I was working 4am to 4pm 6 days a week. One morning, my mom called and said my grandma had passed. I was no able to leave the store till noon. I took off the whole week after and started looking for a job when I got back from the funeral. I cannot stand working for someone that would not let me leave for a death in the family.

NCD that's awful, I'm sorry that happened.

All my jobs have been pretty good, I've only had a few other than babysitting full time.  I think Target was the worst because of what I did, it was boring but at least I worked with fun people.

That's gross, but I can't help but laugh at the kid's comment. Poor guy.

We had someone drop their pants in the middle of the nuts/bolts aisle at Home Depot and start peeing. Thankfully, I only heard about that and I was a Head Cashier there. I would have assigned that clean-up job to someone else.

Oh, and I'm far too loyal for my own good when it comes to jobs. I know it was so gross.
  • Teaching at a Elementary School in Virgina. The prinicpal was a micro manger. It was told that every year she had a group of teachers she would harrass. The year I came my name was high on  the list. She had people from the county coming to my class as if they were going to catch something because she did not understand and Austim classroom. Everytime they came out with a great report. At the end of the year the superintended came to visit me to hear me out. Once she found out all the details( my side of the story). She moved me out she believe the principal had something personal against me. The year that I left they fired the principal.

  • Wow Jess that's disgusting!

My jobs have all been pretty good. The worst was while I was working at Qdoba. I had worked there for two years when the manager quit. A new guy came in to replace him. Later, the assistant manager left. There was a lot of talk from the manager that I would be promoted to assistant manager after she left. Instead he brought in one of his friends.

This new assistant manager was a total jerk. He kept putting me down and had some severe small dog syndrom. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights we would stay open till 3am for the bar rush. One night the assistant manager came in trashed to get some food. He kept trying to go to the back and cut an avocado. I was actually really scared of him swinging a knife around. We finally got it away from him and made him sit in a booth.

Right before we were supposed to close, a guy with a bulldog came in. The drunk assistant manager kept yelling at the customer telling him to get his dog out. I told him to go sit down and I would take care of it. The guy took his dog outside and came back in and the assistant manager was uncontrollable. He punched the customer in the face and I called the cops on him.

Later I told the manager that if he didn't fire the assistant manager then I would quit. I wouldn't put up with his crap any more. I even called the main office where the owner is and told their HR what happened, but they didn't really care.

  • My first job was at a KFC. I hated it. My face broke out really bad because of all the grease in the air. It was awful. It has been about 14 years since I worked there and I still don't eat there. I have tried it once since then and it grossed me out.

  • I worked as a hostess at a TGIFridays. I hated that job. I was only 16. The managers didn't have any control. They worked me past child labor laws and I had to file a sexual harassment case. I was there a total of about 8 months.

  • A long time ago a babysat for the biggest brat on the planet.  I was 9 and the mother was always late to come home.  I was paid a dollar an hour.  Yup.  Never did that again.
  • The last restaurant I worked in was horrible.  It was owned by a lebanese guy and his wife was therefore head waitress/manager.  She sucked at her job.  I wasn't too thrilled about working with many of the people there because they only spoke Lebanese around me until they learned I knew a few phrases.  The place lacked many health and safety protocols and was an IRS nightmare the way it was handled.  I was "fired" because I rang a guy up twice thanks to the worst credit card machine ever and was inconsiderate to a family who didn't want to pay their $50 bill (and it was going to come out of my paycheck thanks to their crappy system).  I quit before I was fired after running around being the only waitress one night where there was just myself and the cook and he kept not doing his job and then complaining about me.  Mostly I left because he was the cook I'd be dealing with the most and he was fascinated with my butt and boobs (plus the IRS and OSHA disaster).  When I left they also didn't pay me for an entire day of work.

  • Holy crud Nik! That is ridiculous. I can't believe that HR didn't care at all...

I thought of another one. At one point, I was subbing in two school districts and at a local chain of daycares. I was almost always called for a school district before the daycare because they open earlier and what not. At the daycare, the teachers themselves are in charge of getting their own subs and if they don't, they can't be gone for any reason.

Anyway, I was in the shower one morning and a teacher from the daycare called my cell. She left a message, then called the owner of the company to tell her that I quit. The owner called and left a message on my cell. I called the owner back and she told me what she was told and I did decide to quit. I won't be treated like that. They paid less than Home Depot, were super demanding, childish, and the only thing I did most days I was there was change diapers.
  • It wasn't that bad I guess but the summer after my freshman year in college I worked at this kid's gym running their birthday parties.  The guy who owned it was a micromanger.  I used to have to blow up helium balloons and tie the ribbon on the end.  Well, he said the way I was doing it (blowing them up, tie them closed, tie ribbon on them) wasn't good and I needed to do it his way (blow them up and tie the ribbon in as it was being tied closed).  I did it his way and it took me like 10 times longer than my way and then he got mad it took me too long.  I just wasn't into working for him so I quit after a month or two.

I also quit a job as a receptionist at a hair salon before I even officially started.  They told me if they other receptionist ever called in sick I had to come it.  I was basically on call 24/7 for a hair salon.  The other receptionist was my friend and I know she's not reliable at all so I decided I wasn't going to back her up any time she didn't feel like going to work so I never officially started that job.

  • By far NOT my worst job ever, but to go along with the gross stories - I worked at Target for a little under a year in between college & grad school.  Sometime after Christmas, when the store was REALLY slow, three of us were working in apparel, when we came out to the main aisle to discover a poo trail going down the store.  Luckily for us, Target has a very strict no-biohazard policy for low-level employees; managers are the only ones who are trained to handle that :)  But when we first called the manager on duty over our walkie-talkies, he didn't come because he thought we were playing a joke because we couldn't stop laughing!  Someone else had to go run and get him because he didn't believe us, hahaha.

My worst job ever was working per diem for a community mental health organization.  New Hampshire has no group homes for adults with mental illness who are unable to live on their own, so it's up to community mental health workers to visit them daily, make sure they're taking their medications, take them to activities, ensure they're eating properly, make sure they're not sick or injured, and get them to bed at night.

At any rate, it was a taxing job, but I enjoyed the clients I worked with - they were generally good people, fun to talk to, etc.  The worst part though, was my boss.  She provided little to no training on what I was supposed to be doing, was generally unsupportive of problems, and turned a complete blind eye to the couple of employees who made fun of our clients.  She would also get REALLY pissed at me when I couldn't come in at a moment's notice, didn't tell me about meetings I was supposed to be going to, told me to show up later than she wanted me to, and blamed it all on me.

To top this off, when I whent to quit the job because it was worsening my own mental health due to the stress and confusion, I found out just how two-faced she was.  She started off the meeting telling me just how awesome I was and how everyone loved me, and when I said "That's great, but I can't do this anymore" she told me that she should have seen it coming, everybody thought I was going to be ducking out, etc. etc.  THEN she had the nerve to tell me that clearly I was unfit for this job because I had been homeschooled, and therefore didn't have the social skills to survive in life.  THEN she went on to tell me how stupid my parents were because they homeschooled me, and that parents shouldn't have the right to choose how to educate their kids.  Note that, while I disagree (and the string of employers I've had both prior to and following that will 100% disagree on her social skills argument), I fully support the right of people to hold this opinion - but this was definitely not appropriate to be airing at that moment, and specifically verbally attacking my parents, whom she'd never met, was definitely uncalled for.

I worked at Ellis Island doing special effects photo souvenirs, we would take a head shot of a guest in front of a green screen and then in Photoshop we would, take their face and put it on an immigrant. I liked the actual process of making the images, it was fun. Unfortunately I had to take the coast guards little boat to work in the morning and back at night and most of the time you had to leap onto the boat. In the winter waiting for the boat in the morning it was freezing, I had to dress like a fisherman with long johns and many layers to stay warm. Also a lot of the visitors were from other countries and that created a language barrier issue, and most of my co-workers were special hires meaning ex-con, or recovering addict. My manager also was not of the English is my first language club, she knew when I was hired that I am a photographer and I shoot a lot of weddings which means I am not always available Friday, or Saturday. She would give me a hard time about not working those days when I had weddings or a shoot, so it came down to her saying which job is more important? I answered not this one, I quit!

  • I worked at an egg farm (not with chickens, but with th eggs) during the summertime in high school, which included cleaning buckets. In a hot room.

Did I mention the buckets were full of either moldy mayonnaise or rotten berries? I gag just thinking about it. But hey, I made $10/hr ($3.50 over min wage at the time), so it made it kind of worth it.
