those going/have been to Costa Rica..

We are planning our HM in Costa Rica.  We have already decided we will be there for 9 nights.  Originally we were going to go to 2 different places (Arenal area and somewhere in Guanacaste).  My question is would you recommend visiting 2 areas (4 nights and 5 nights) or three areas (3 nights each)?  Also, any hotel reccs would be appreciated as well!  Thanks!

Re: those going/have been to Costa Rica..

  • i would just visit two areas...visiting 3 would just be too hectic and as soon as you're relaxed you're going to have to pack up again

I went to Costa Rica in May of 2009 on a study abroad trip and we stayed in San Jose at the Gran Hotel, in the Arenal area at Lomas del Volcan (really cute little cottages at the base of the volcano), and in Monteverde (don't stay in Monteverde, it is not a nice place for overnight in my opinion). We were there for 13 days and I felt rushed going to those 3 places, but a honeymoon may be more relaxing than a study abroad trip of course :)

I would highly recommend the Arenal area (we went to a place called Baldi hot springs that was amazing) and I would recommend to stay away from the San Jose area, it isn't somewhere I would want to stay on my honeymoon. Costa Rica is great though, the people are very nice and friendly, but be aware of driving in the country, it can be quite terrifying!

  • Costa Rica has a lot to offer. That's where my FI proposed in July. We were there this past July for a month and went to Arenal. I think it depends on what kind of honeymoon you want. My FI and I are into seeing as much as possible-so when we travel we hop around. So I think you should talk to your FI first and see what kind of honeymoon you both want.

We went to CR for our honeymoon in June/July and loved it.  We stayed 8 nights and visited 2 places -- 5 nights at the beach in Manuel Antonio and 3 nights in Arenal.  We had originally thought about adding on a third place on, but I'm really glad we didn't because we would have been rushed.  Traveling from place to place in CR can be time consuming due to the curvy roads, especially during heavy rain, and domestic flights are often canceled.  In CR it can take twice as long to drive however many miles just because nothing is ever a straight shot, so just keep travel time and possible bad weather in mind when planning your trip.

As for places to visit, I highly recommend where we went -- MA (great beaches with rainforest meeting the shoreline and wildlife everywhere) and Arenal (active volcano, plenty of activities, hot springs, more wildlife, etc.).  We stayed at 2 very nice hotels that have great reviews...Arenas del Mar in MA (www.arenasdelmar.com) and Arenal Nayara in La Fortuna, Arenal (www.arenalnayara.com).  Have fun!  CR is beautiful.

ETA:  One more suggestion.  Arenal was amazing, but I wouldn't spend more than 3 or 4 nights there.  We did a lot of excursions and 3 nights was plenty for us.  The activities/excursions are fun and the volcano is amazing, but there's nowhere to really relax.  If you're splitting the trip up then I would recommend spending the extra day/night at the beach.  HTH
