Reasonable price to pay for a veil?

Hi Knotties!

I got really lucky with my wedding dress. I bought it on a sample sale for a very, very good price. Now I am looking for a veil (I was going to wear one that had been in my family for 75 years, but my mom didn't preserve it, so it's destroyed). I have been looking at some veils with slight crystal accents on them to match my dress but cannot seem to justify spending $500 on a veil when I paid such an awesome price for my dress. Maybe I am wrong and a good veil that will last for more than one wedding is worth that much, but wanted to ask you, the goddess' of all things wedding. What do you think is a reasonable price to pay for a veil?

Thanks so much for your help!

Sincerely,

September 15th 2012

  • Have you checked on Etsy  I found my veil on there for $23.  Given mine is a plain, simple illusion birdcage blusher veil but still.  They have lots of options that are relatively inexpensive compared to some I've saw online ($115 for basically the same thing I found on etsy)

  • i bought mine off etsy as well  a traditional finger tip veil with satin edging for $45.  same one at the store was $170!
  • I think David's Bridal veils are about $175 for crystals.  If I get a diamond white dress I may borrow my sister's veil, otherwise I am thinking of making it.
  • ugh yea i bought mine to match the dress with crystal detail on it and match the whiteness of the dress... i was worried the whites wouldn't match... but ended up paying about 200 bucks

  • I would check out Esty. :)

Another option (this is the route I took) would be to buy some of the supplies, like a comb (found mine at michaels) and tulle and then crystal beads and take it to a seamstress.

I actually used tulle from my mothers veil, and lace from her wedding dress and paid $45 to get it made. And the comb only cost me about $5. :)
  • Always check Etsy. There is absolutely no reason to pay that much money for tulle.

  • I made my own for $8.

Like PP said, check Etsy and don't be super concerned about the whites not matching perfectly.  if you don't have a super thick veil the color won't be that noticeable.  Also, ask a seamstress to see how much it will cost to make one.

I paid $144 for mine. It had a lot of detail on it, lace, beads, etc. I almost paid $120 on Etsy but then I found mine at the same place I bought my gown and It matched so perfectly, I just couldn't resist.

  • Check etsy and craigslist.   Etsy has so many, in so many different price ranges, but I bought one on craigslist in perfect condition for $15.
  • I paid $20 for mine from valuveil.com.  It was a single tier chapel length veil with a cut edge and scattered pearls.  It worked perfectly with my dress and I couldn't imagine paying any more than I did (especially considering you really only wear it for the 20 min ceremony....so not worth $500 for that).

I got one from valuveil too, $15 with shipping! It's perfect!
  • My sister bought a comb & tulle & paid $10 for her veil!  I think my veil was $75 & that was 1/2 off the regular price 19 years ago.

Ditto PPs.  Check Etsy.  But also look into either making it or having it made by a seamstress or, (if you're lucky) a crafty friend/family member.  My Mom said she wanted to make mine for me because of sentimental reasons and because I want an old fashioned Juliette cap style which is hard to find otherwise.  We just bought all of the materials necessary plus some extra in case of mistakes for $12.  There are lots of options, no need to settle and pay hundreds for tulle!

  • This may sound kind of crazy but I got one for $7 at hobby lobby, it came with a plastic comb so i'm gonna have to get a metal one but I think you should definitely check out nearby craft stores. It dosen't look any cheaper than the ones that are 100+ dollars.

  • Mine is $190, and it's a finger-tip veil that has crystals all over it. The ONLY reason I got it was because I got a $200 credit towards a veil with my dress. Otherwise, I wouldn't have spent more than $50 on a veil.

  • Do you have any friends that have gotten married? My veil was my something "borrowed" from my cousin. It was an expensive beautiful veil that she didn't mind lending me. I was careful with it and didn't wear it to the reception, just for the ceremony and pictures.
