DJ vs. LIVE BAND

I was just looking for everyones opinions on a dj or a live band....what do you think? Thanks!

it really depends on both the DJ or the live band... one thing is that a live band tends to be more expensive, so if cost is a facter you definitely need to look at that. Also, see if you can check out either before having hiring them. Although, a bad live band is always going to be worse than a bad DJ.

I'm going for DJ, mostly because of cost, but also partly because I don't know of any live bands in my area. You should go onto your local area's thread and ask if anyone has any good suggestions for DJ's/Bands around your area that you could check out.

If I had the funds, I would be flying down the live band that performed at FI's cousin's wedding... they were fantastic.

I prefer a DJ, as the variety of the music can vary more. With a live band I feel like I am at a concert and need to pay attention to the band instead of dancing, etc.

We're doing a DJ: chepaer (in our region) than a live band and they can play a wide variety of music.

It really depends on you, the band or DJ in question, what you want out of your wedding music, etc.

I much prefer a live band. But here in Dallas, they are very expensive and were out of our budget, plus my husband is a musician and he thinks they are cheesy (as well as overpriced). We went with a higher budget DJ and were very happy, as he was fantastic.

We had both. Originally, we were just going to have the live band. The band is a local band who has featured prominently in DH and my relationship (the play our song, played when he proposed, etc). However, the band had never played a wedding before. We hired a DJ to be the MC and to provide dinner music. A bunch of people danced to the band's music. Once the dancing started, I think I only sat down to eat cake!

I think a live band can work really well in a situation like this- one that has a lot of range. I've been to a few with live bands and the only one that was really great was the one that had a really big range of songs.

We're going for a higher budget DJ- we were spending money in other areas and a band wasn't top priority for us. We've heard nothing but amazing reviews of our DJ so we're pretty sure we won't be disappointed.

One thing I have found wth a lot of bands is just the problem with starting and stopping. One wedding I went to there were a lot of breaks (they had to eat, go to the bathroom, etc) so everyone would get all revved up and then the music would stop. Just didn't flow well.
