Alterations - Finding a good seamstress

I already posted something on my local message board about the three exact places/people to go to for my dress fittings and alterations, but aside from that, how do you pick a good alterations place? What do I look for to determine which one of those three I should go with? Thanks!

  • I think recommendations are really all you have to go on. The girls on my local board have already sold me on an alterations place, and my dress isn't even in yet!
  • I was recommended my seamstress through the ladies on my local.

  • You could always bring a "test" item to a tailor and see how they do. Have the item hemmed, taken in, darted, etc.

See what their attention to detail is like when you go to have the test item pinned up. Are they asking good questions about your preferred fit? Are they taking the time to really see how the garment fits you?

When you get the item back, check their stitching and overall work. That all should give you a good idea.
