I would like to keep my last name for professional purposes (I'm a writer, so I want to keep my recognized pen name), but change legally to my FI's last name.  Do you think this will cause undue confusion later on? Also, I've seen many "name change kits" advertised in mags and around the web.  Are they worth the money, or should I just do the legwork myself?  I'd need to change everything from state ID and SSN card to a passport and government benefits.
    Posted by Tandra&Devin
<div>Dear Tandra&Devin,</div><div>We think it's perfectly fine to have a professional name and legally change your name to your husbands.  As far as 'name change' kits' are concerned we suggest you google your home state to see if there are any specific requirements -then see what the kit contains and if you feel it will expedite any of this go right ahead!</div><div>Congratulations,</div><div>The Garter Brides
In college, I changed my last name because I didn't want my Father's name (parent's diverced when i was an infant).  I am still "young" in the professional sense, but having my hard to pronounce last name "Levassuer" has actually helped me be recgonized.  My fiance is leaving it to me to choose, he is ok either way.  My gut tells me to keep my name, for professional use, and I already chose this name.  But my brain questions if that goes against my Christian faith, "two become one."  I need to look in the Bible for an specific verses that discuss the "name."  From you, I ask, am I over thinking it?  It seems common for Brides to keep thier names, maiden or not.
    Posted by aligwen
I chose to keep my maiden name when I married for the 2nd time, (25 years ago). My 1st H made a big stink about insisting I change my name, so I did, but it never seemed right, or felt natural. After 3 years of marriage, we divorced & I went back to my own name. My father is the only male in his family, & I don't have any brothers to carry on the family name.  I explained to my new husband that I wanted to keep my name & he was totally fine w/ it. The commitment to the relationship is way more important than what you call yourself. If your FI loves & supports you, he should (& you too) be able to understand that your name is only a minimal part of the whole marriage. Remember too that the Bible was written during a time when it was ok for neighboring tribes to kidnap women for brides, women could be bought/sold against their will in exchange for camels or other animals. Also, if your husband died, his brother or other unattached male family member was required to step up & marry his widow. I believe the Bible is a wonderful book, just that some of the wedding customs of those times are a teensy bit outdated.
  • Leslie, I am in a similar position--my dad, who I loved dearly, had no brothers, and no sons.

I kept my BIRTH name when I married, in 1985, snd kept it when I remarried in 2008.  I think that some of the posts above miss the mark.  I consulted a lawyer, and he advised me 1) NOT to hyphenate--too confusing, and 2) NOT to use one name at work, and one socially.  ALL legal documents should be in one name.  If people call me Mrs. DHLastName, I'm fine with it--I don't correct them, until they need to write me a check.  Same with DH, he doesn't correct them, when people call him Mr Handfast.
