  It's not that bad at all!  I did it in Dayton, so I don't know the Columbus experience per se but it can't be that different.
  1. After your marriage license gets sent in by whomever you are married by, best man, etc. (our minister did it), it's took a week for our marriage certificate to be processed.  We just had to call to make sure before we traveled down to the courthouse.
  2. Went down, picked up our marriage certificate (I bought 2 copies just in case from the same place we got our license) and walked straight to the SSA.
  3. This was the longest part, just because you just have to sit and wait.  If you print and fill out a form, the process is quick and painless.  The card got sent to me like roughly 2 weeks later.
  4. Then I headed to the BMV another day, and they ended up telling me just to wait until my license expires (less than 6 months away) and carry around a marriage certificate just in case instead of paying $25 now and then $25 again soon.
  5. Banks: I called my bank, they sent a form, and then a new credit card.  My H's and I's bank, just entered it into the system when I walked in and sent me a new debit card.
  6. Loans and School: Just needed a copy of the certificate and a copy of my new SSN card.
  7. Passport: Haven't done this yet, but it's just a mailing process.  Going to Europe in 2012, so I have time )
  
  Everything else is just going to get changed as I go.  The library will be next when I pick up books, and doctors' appts, etc.  I hope you do consider it.  It's been one of my favorite parts so far about being married.  If it's rough, I kept my maiden name as a second middle name.  I'm the last in my bloodline and could not part with it entirely.  Granted it only shows up on important docs, but it's still important to me.

  I got married in cincy but got name changed and all that jazz in columbus and it was a nightmare!! Took like 6 weeks to get done. You have to wait for your marriage certificate to get to you by either picking it up downtown or ordering it online and havign it mailed. I choose mail option because I didnt' want to go downtown- probably wrong choice since i got married end of june and they were busy. Then take that the social security office and bmv to get name change and new DL. I somehow lucked out and took marriage license from wedding to social security office in worthington and they accepted it (though told later they by another married friend they werent' supposed to--oh well . After ss# in you're all set.
