Addressing STD

I'm sure this has been asked but I couldn't find a post when I searched.

When addressing STD's does the direction (i.e. north, south, northwest etc.) of a street need to be spelled out?
example:
1234 N. Maple Street
or
1234 North Maple Street

    Our STD's were pretty casual, so I didn't worry about it for those.  When we did our invitations, we did spell out the direction words.  I don't remember where I read that it should be done, but I did!

    Thanks - that helps a lot.  That was my original plan since our save the date's are pretty casual as well
