When did you book the fights?

Hi all,
we have booked our Caribbean HM but not the flights yet. Are any of you in the same situation? Is it better to wait for a last minute deal or to book asap?

TIA

Re: When did you book the fights?

  • In 99% of cases, if you wait until last minute, you pay much more, especially if it's holiday times/weekends/school breaks. It's better to book sooner. If you book with an agent, ask them about your particular destination and dates. Every once in awhile an airline will have a sale to certain destinations.

  • Wiwi! Your wedding is still 7 months out right? You should start looking at flights, but don't book anything too soon. I've found that in some cases, booking way too early can cost more. I've had flights that I've booked 2-3 months out, and a month before the date it actually dropped. Right now there are flights around March my wedding that I'm looking up that already cost a grand, but I know it'll go down closer to the date.  Usually 30-45 days before the flight has the best deals. But not always, if it falls on holidays of course, and it the place where you'll be going to. Just keep on the look out! Good luck! :)
  • Looking now doesn't hurt, but I would wait until about 6-8 weeks to book (so when you send out your invitations).  Airfare can fluctuate from day to day so I would also check every day for a week and then book on the cheapest day the following week.
  • Good question, I was wondering myself.  I've been looking for a few months now and the prices have gone up and now down.  So I think we are waiting until its closer to the wedding.
  • We aren't flying for our hm, but I giggled at the subject line.

  • I booked our flight for our November honeymoon in May. Which would be 6 months out. I had used Yapta.com to track a specific flight that I liked. I started researching in January when flights were upwards of $776. In May Yapta alerted me to a fare drop for my flight ($593). I immediately booked and glad I did because it has not gone below that price. I have still watched and besides a few days when it was $593 it has never dropped below and is now as of today $630.
Long story short. Do your research and when a fare is what you can live with..book it and don't look back.
  • I haven't heard of Yapta but I'm definitely going to check that out! They also have places like "airfare watchdog" that help you track prices on flights. I would definitely get signed up for something like that to help you out. GL!
  • We booked at 7 months out through a travel agent.  We bought price insurance and the rates dropped so we got back over $200 each.
  • i always book as early as possible so i get the flights/seats i want. lower prices towards travel times are not guaranteed and i like knowing it's done.

  • Thanks for all the feedback ladies!

    and hi Kara!
  • Our honeymoon is next September and we booked the flights mid November this year only because my parents were buying us first class tickets for our wedding gift. One because my FI is 6'5" and hates planes and because I have never gone first class and we plan on having children right away. Anywho the first class around here books quick especially since we are leaving on a monday and have to fly to Atlanta first, we are competitng with the business travelers. Hope that helps for a timeline, no matter what you fly take into account the business trips because at our airport thats why the flights book so fast!

  • I booked flights to Antigua for next June last week.  I had meant to book them about two months ago but I'm a procrastinator.  On the plus side, they were about $150 less per ticket last week than they were two months ago.  I didn't want to gamble on them continuing to fall since I feel like they were a pretty good deal; round trip from Tampa to Antigua via Miami for $601/each.

This.  I booked the flights for our September HM in January.  We went to Europe and found great deals on flights in Jan.  I'm glad I bought when I did b/c I checked back several times in between booking and the HM and they never got cheaper.
