I'm still not over the paper plate poll

I did not realize that people did this and it has shaken my world.

Eating off paper isn't even pleasant.  WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!?!?!

we keep paper plates in the house. i am NOT washing a plate if i make toast and only toast. so, we use paper. not styrofoam, and not dead puppy skins. plain white cheapo paper.

so yeah, we use them almost every day. i also use them if i am having a snack of cookies, or a peice of an entenmann's cake.

(i am super lazy, and also have a skin thing going on with my hand, so i absolve myself for any wrongdoing to the earth. my bag, mother nature.)

  • For just toast or cookies I would likely use a napkin.  So maybe I'm not all that different.

I'm all about minimizing dish use (I'm looking at you, H, for filling both sides of the sink with dishes making yourself a freaking ceasar salad today...is summer over yet??) and reuse the same glass all day, etc.  But I wouldn't be able to tolerate paper plates for meals.

Trust me it rocked my world too.  For a piece of toast I get a napkin, but I just can't enjoy eating on paper for every last thing.  The same guy also talked about how great the boil in a bag omelet was (eggs, stuff, in a ziploc cooked in boiling water).  Then you don't even need to wash the plate, just eat it out of the ziploc!  Blech all around

  • I never use paper plates. EVER. It blows my mind that they are a regular part of people's lives.

  • Aren't paper plates a recyclable product?
  • I'm pretty sure he is ingesting a lot of plastic, too.  Ick!!

what about disposable napkins or paper towels?

eta - der. i mean, someone mentioned cost in the poll below. does using disposable napkins count as wasteful, too?

if he eats them, though, i think that makes up for it.

Not if food/oil on it.  At least that has been the rule anywhere that I have lived.  That's why they don't accept pizza boxes.

And that reduce, reuse, recycle thing is in order of effectiveness.  Recycling doesn't make it all okay.

garbage collectors will give tickets to people who have left cardboard pizza boxes in regular trash - just ask busy if she ever got a ticket!
  • We'll have to wait for our resident paper engineer to explain why some places can take dirty paper and others can't.

Yes you can recycle something with a food stain. The garbage companies just don't want a box or cup full of stuff put in the recycling bin because it makes the sorting process harder. They run all paper and plastic through a bleeching machine. If they can turn recycled news paper into plain white toilet paper, then can do the same with a stained paper plate.
  • Also, using make up is much worse then paper produts. The amount of plastic that is used for the packaging alone does more damage to the planet in one week than a whole year of paper plates being thrown out. Let's not get started on the animals that are tortured and killed to make and test that stuff.
  • Also what is so unpleasent about eating off of paper? It's not like the paper adds a flavor to the food. Also paper plates are bio degradable, so even if they are not recycled they do not do any real damage to the earth. Unless you think Al gore created the internet, this shouldn't be an issue with you.

The short answer is that yes it can be recycled.  Long answer, it's not like one plate magically becomes one plate.  It takes a lot of water and energy and chemical to make that happen.  When you are talking a "bleached" sort of product you'd be lucky to get a 50% return on a plate.  Food and oil just makes the process even worse.  Not every recycle center will handle food waste.  So now you are adding in the trucking from the person's home, to a center, to a facility that will process it.

That all takes into account that the person using a paper plate for every meal would even care to take the time to try to recycle.  My guess is that it's not a top priority.

What's unpleasant about it for me is that yes, the paper does get into your food.  I also know what sort of sh!t is in that paper.

Newspaper doesn't really become tp either.

    I'm just a slut though.
  • *hugs 6 like a long lost lovah*

I know our recycling center doesn't want the pizza boxes.  They have a sign on the cardboard recycling bin asking people to not put them in b/c they aren't equipped to handle the process necessary to actually recycle them.

I don't remember calling you a slut. But atleast you admit your shirt comings.

How many abortions have you had, I ask because by my estimation, you owe me about 40.85 per procedure.

I love how the only response you have is to the slut comment.  You did not call me specifically a slut, but I used birth control and had sex.

By your estimation I owe you $0.  Your idiot tax bill is up to six figures though.

  • Because the rest of your argument is wrong. The slut comment was funny so i responded. Funny how you don't mention anything about make up destroying the environment. But that stuff is ok because it covers the craterfilled double chins you WW'ers call a face. And you can't put a price on beauty, even if it means the end of the ozone layer.
  • Also when did I say using birth control made a woman a slut? No that makes them smart. And didn't you just post that you are having a baby? You obviously are not using birth control in the corect way. Here is a tip it goes on his penis not in your mouth.

Yep, that degree in chemical engineer with a focus on paper and 12 years in the industry doesn't mean diddly.

I didn't comment on the makeup because the extent of it is a tube of mascara, an eyeshadow, and a powder.  The packaging is less than one paper plate.  None of it is tested on animals.

  • Sure because scientists spend all day on message boards. And dont actuall know that all plastic is worse for the enviornment then paper. If you are a scientist I am the president.

    Scientist=/= engineer.

I was discussing paper.  Not plastic.

  • Next your going to tell me that your make up is not made in a chemical plant, but made by magic fairies.
  • And I was bringing up the point that anyone that uses make up on a daily basis should keep their mouth shut on environmental issues. Also lying stay at home mom / engineer.

So a stay at home mom can't have been an engineer?  Or can't know something about the environment or paper?  Envirionmentalists can't wear makeup?  Huh.

Yep.  You certainly can't be any of that.   Just shut up and go bake a cake.  Make sure those shoes stay off and your face stays plain.
  • 6, you are still an engineer.  You just added another line to your resume.  "the 6s, engineering the future in utero."
  • Never said a stay at home mom can't do any of those things. I said ypu are lying about being an engineer. Big difference. Im sure your phony internet buddies believe you, but all of your engineering expertise seems to have come straight from the google.
