DJ vs. Band

Someone mentioned it was quiet on the boards toddy so I figured I would ask all my questions :)

I really want a club/party kind of feel for our reception. Definitely lots of R&B.... Old school Luther Vandross for the older crowd.

Any opinions on going with a band vs a DJ???

Or any recommendations of a band or DJ that fits this style?

I'm going with a DJ, but that's just my personal choice.  I think DJ's can better gauge the guests moods, and from what I know, a good DJ should play what you want them too.  It's your wedding and you are employing them for the night - they should want to give you what would make your night perfect, and if Luther Vandross is perfect, they should be able to do that for you.   :)

Also, DJs can kind of mix things up in terms of musical styles and tempos so you can have a bit of everything.

Bands are expensive.  That is all I know.

Honestly, I think M&M is more of a party crowd DJ, which is one reason I didn't look into using them (since I wasn't going for that).  But a good DJ can give you whatever vibe you are looking for.

I'm going with a DJ too. If any guest wants a song they can request it!

FWIW, I love the vibe that a live band gives a wedding and this would have been my preference.  But my husband is a musician and he feels they are cheesy and overpriced so he nixed it.

The problems with a band is the expense and also, they have to take breaks which can kill the dance floor! I wanted have a band just for the dinner portion and our formal dance, then go to a DJ, but I couldn't fit it in my budget.

I'm lucky because my cousin is in a local Dallas Jazz/Funk band and one of the band members is also a DJ, so I'm getting both for an amazing deal! And they are learning our first dance song just for us. :)

However if you have come across a band that you like, see if they also provide DJ services because that will fill up the time when they are on breaks.

That said, I've been to two recent weddings and if you go with just a DJ you should be fine as long as they have a good list of songs you want to hear and know how to mix it up a bit to fit the mood.

Funny thing - my FI is a musician, and he wanted a band (as opposed to a DJ) for that reason - but at the same time, he isn't a fan of cover bands... I think it was just because he wanted to be able to get up and jam for a song if he wanted :)
Anyhow - we are going the DJ route because of the variety they offer.  Yes, there are very talented bands that can do a wide range of songs, but to truly do the crazy variety we wanted, we had to go with a DJ (outlaw country, old soul, punk, metal, rock, rap, 80s...)
