Where do you get your dresses?

I'm going to a wedding this weekend - Ben's cousin - and most of his extended family will be there, so I want to make a good impression since it's the first time I'm meeting them.

And... I have nothing to wear.

AND... I have no fashion sense.

I went to Macy's and Herberger's last night and I couldn't find a balance - it was either teeny bopper homecoming dance dresses or mom dresses.  I'd either look like a slut or matronly.

I'm guessing that I'm going to have to go to somewhere that ISN'T a department store.  Any suggestions?

Re: Where do you get your dresses?

  • Express?  I usually have good luck there.  I also like New York & Company.  If you have extra time, I've also bought party dresses off-the-rack from DB.
  • Kohls, Target, H&M or Costco.
  • I hate that the twenty-something stage when it comes to clothes sometimes.

Try White House Black Market, New York and Company, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic or local boutiques. I buy most stuff from local boutiques.

  • LOFT.  Loft always has awesome dresses.  really, LOFT is my answer to everything.

    East is wise.
  • Honestly, I use ebay.  There's a seller on there with BCBG dresses for great prices.  Just go to a department store and figure out your size.  I also get a lot of J Crew dresses on there as well.
  • I've actually had a lot of success finding cocktail dresses at JCPenney of all places.

I would also try a Marshall's/Ross kind of store.

  • I agree with Ann Taylor Loft, Ann Taylor, and White House Black Market.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I've had great luck at the BCBG outlet in Albertville if you can make a trip that direction in time.  Otherwise, JCrew, LOFT, Banana Republic, Anthropologie.

You'd need a little more lead time to account for shipping, but I love Rue La La.  I just bought this dress this morning ($40!  Score!):

eta - And ditto Seshat on Kohl's.

Ouch! I think LOFT is a good suggestion. Unless we're not talking about Ann Taylor LOFT and are instead talking about a LOFT that sells all things crocheted and quilted.

  • JCPenney's / Kohl's, or some of the miscellaneous stores in the Mills mall :)

  • MIAF, I googled "kitten sweater" and got this in my image search. I'm thinking of having it framed and sending it to you as a wedding present:

Haha!  But that's why I'm asking.. I mean you're what, 23ish?  And you shop there?  So obviously it can't be old lady clothes but I don't know why it's in my head that it is.  Did it used to be?
  • Its on the pricy side but Nordstrom has a really good season this year.  I also like Banana Republic, White House Black Market, and sometimes express.

I LOVE IT. I have the perfect place for it too. Is that Shrek?

Jenny, yeah, I'm 23ish and I like it. I tend to dress a little conservative though.

Are you thinking of Ann Taylor?  The actual Ann Taylor (as opposed to Ann Taylor LOFT) is definately more conservative, older, business minded clothing.  LOFT is age appropriate for anyone in their twenties that realizes the days of tube tops and club wear should be behind them.  They have conservative stuff like cardigans and dress pants, but they have really great going-out tops and trendy dresses too.

  • TJ Maxx, LOFT, Overstock, and Macy's for me mostly. I'm wearing this one from Macy's to a wedding this weekend:

    http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=472765&CategoryID=51470

I know it's flowery, but it's a lot less on the matronly side in person.

About AT LOFT: I find them a much younger store than AT. I love their clothes, and AT feels stuffy and middle-aged to me for some reason. Or at least my local one does.
  • Opal - that dress is darling.  Where the eff was that dress at MY Macy's!!!

  • I can never find anything in-store either. Their organization drives me nuts. I always wind up using their dress finder online. Maybe you can call and ask if they carry it?
  • MIAF, you must be reading my diary or something.

I usually buy stuff online, but since I'm strapped for time I've been taking to the stores.  It's interesting that's for damn sure.
