Toning arms

I have to have some wrist surgery in early March, so I know I will not be able to do push-ups/weights until at least May, if I'm lucky.
Any ideas on other things I can do to tone arms while I recover?

Re: Toning arms

  • Would you be able to swim?

  • oo that's a great idea, I didn't even think of that!  I'm sure once the incision heals...I didn't even consider it because I never really swam before.  Thanks!
  • Also  try general cardio,  like biking and running.

The whole "Toning"  concept doesn't really exist. I know, I know,  EVERY womans magazine and piece of fitness media touts "Toning" this and that.  Its really just burning off fat that accumulates on the arm.

Muscles dont get "toned" ie. longer and thinner and smoother when you use them.  There are either strong muscles or weak muscles.  Simple as that.

I would strengthen them NOW so that you can just worry about general weight loss after the surgery,  you wont lose much strength over a month or twos time.  And during that time you can shed the fat covering up those strong arms!

    Good Luck!

  • Swimming is one of the best workouts I've ever done....also some yoga can help you continue to tone, most moves don't require any pressure on your wrists...the warrior poses definitely work my arms...
  • I didn't think of yoga either!!  I have never tried yoga before, sounds like it would be a great time to check it out.
Thanks for the advice, I know feel like I have a plan of action to not fall off the wagon during my month out of work!
  • I love yoga!  Has anyone ever tried hot yoga?

  • Love hot yoga. Such an exhausting work out (especially since I'm relatively new to yoga in general). Drink lots of water!
  • I love hot yoga too!

Have you thought about using light wrist/ankle weights strapped to your forearms instead of your wrists?  That way you wouldn't be putting any pressure or tension on the wrist itself like you would have when gripping dumbbells and could still work your tris/bis and shoulders.

You could also do boxing moves (jab/cross/hook/uppercut) and arm circles (arms straight out to sides, move hands in circular motions as if washing windows, first forward, then backward, both small and large circles - all different combinations).  Those require no weights but really work the arms.

Best of luck with your surgery & a speedy recovery.

  • Hot yoga kicks my butt! When I can't make it to the gym I put my yoga mat in the bathroom and crank up the heat and I really start sweatin!!!
