Appy ideas

So we're having a Canada Day Eve Party on the 30th.  Food-wise, I want to go simple, but I don't want dogs and burgers and stuff since we're doing the BBQ theme for our stampede/housewarming party on the 10th.

I was going to do

-cherry or grape tomatoes on a toothpic with boccocini cheese drizzle with balsamic
-crab stuffed mushrooms
-melba crackers w/cream cheese and red pepper jelly topped with half a green olive.

And that's all I've got.  I want vegetarian friendly, but will also do meat options.  I am thinking beer dip... doesn't really go with the theme but who gives a shiit right?  It's free food!  I was also thinking about getting a dozen or so samosas catered.

  • It's not super interesting, but I love the little crispy bread, with a hunk of fresh mozarella and topped with bruschetta.

  • Yeah we kind of have the tomato cheese thing going on.  Maybe we'll add a crouton to the little tomato boccocini skewers though!  Thanks for the inspiration!

Or since you're doing BBQ later, you could do swedish meatballs in the crockpot.  Yum!

  • Pizza bread! It's really easy to make and vegetarian.

    Loaf of french bread, sliced
    Can of chopped black olives
1/2 bunch of green onions, sliced
Mayo (I don't measure it, just use enough until you have the consistency the way you want it)
    Shredded mozzarella
    Sauteed mushrooms

Mix the veggies and cheese with mayo, spread on french bread, then bake at 350 until the bread is crusty and the cheese is melted, about 15 minutes.

    Curry Chicken and Grape Salad

    3 cups cooked, diced chicken
1 1/2 cups celery, thinly sliced
1 cup green seedless grapes, sliced lengthwise
    1 tbsp. lemon juice
    1 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper
    1 1/2-2 tsp curry powder
    6 tbsp mayonnaise
    3 tbsp toasted slivered almonds
    1 can water chestnuts

Mix together, refrigerate overnight for best results!
    YUMYUMYUM

    ETA: water chestnuts.
  • I think I need to sample these tomato skewers, like now. Also, I applaud your beer dip and your theme-shirking attitude. There's always room for beer dip.

Have you ever made ebelskivers? I just used my pan for the first time this week. So easy and so good. I can't wait to make more this weekend. I'm thinking Nutella ones and then I want to experiment with savory ones.  They're perfect for party food, too.
  • Ooh, you should put a basil leaf on the tomato/cheese/balsamic skewers.  Yum.

Oh and I'm totally going to do something brie related too I think.  I feel like I have too much cheese going on though.

  • Ebelskivers are spherical pancakes (essentially) that you can fill with whatever you like. I made raspberry jelly ones on Tuesday. I also made some that were just plain, no filling and gave them a dusting of sugar so they were kind of like beignets. And if I spelled that wrong I beg forgiveness.

Brie related things are always awesome.

Every year for Christmas I cut small squares of phyllo dough, stick them in a greased mini-muffin tin, put a chunk of Brie and a small spoonful of raspberry jam in the middle and bake according to the directions on the phyllo.  It's super easy and good.

Also, you can never have too much cheese.

  • I'd say they're more of a cross between a pancake and a donut.
  • Those sound suspiciously like Dunkin' Donut Munchkins to me, Manda.

Brie, that's how I did that baked brie recipe that I pasted here for a party once.  I just did them on a cookie sheet though, not a muffin tin.
