Assigned tables or assigned seats?

I keep bending back and forth on this one, so I am asking my fellow knotties:

Re: Assigned tables or assigned seats?

  • Unless you are having a sit down dinner then there's no need to assign seats.

Even if you are having a sit down dinner there's no need to assign seats (as opposed to tables).  I have never been to a wedding where the seats were assigned, and my understanding is that this is really only appropriate at black tie affairs.

  • We had a plated dinner and assigned tables only.

I tend to think that assigning actual seats is only necessary if you're trying to follow protocol: i.e. the Governor should be seated to the left of the host, etc.

So you certainly CAN assign seats if you want to, but it isn't necessary ;)

We assigned tables, not seats. We made sure to group the tables so people where with people they would like (We consulted our parents for seating extended family), and this way everybody had a seat with people they knew. Individual seats seemed way too anal for me.

I've heard too many horror stories of people not assigning the tables and then Nana got stuck next to the DJ, or Great Aunt Gertrude wound up sitting with the groom's frat brothers, while couples couldn't get 2 chairs next to each other.

Tables are not rocket science, it took us about 10 minutes to do.

  • Tables, yes.  Individual seat, no.  That's just too much needless hassle.
  • I never considered this before, but I like it! If you only assign tables and not seats, do you still need place cards? We were going to make a really neat board with the tables and a sort of relationship key, would we then also need a place card at the table if we did not assign specific seats?
  • Thanks trix! I never thought about it that way...so much to keep in mind plan for :(
  • Assign tables! Otherwise it's just too controlling.
  • I'm doing assigned tables- it cuts down on the cost of all the place cards.
