Cleaning and Sizing a Used Dress-help!

I purchased a dress from a shop that donates the money to charity, The dresses are donated so the picking is limited and changes often.

I love the dress I picked but there are some MAJOR concerns I have. The dress has been worn in a destination wedding and some seams are ripped(though can be fixed) but there is sand inside and there are marks and stains throughout the dress. (the shop said alterations and cleanign is done by the purchaser and will need to be done on almost any dress)

The dress is also a 8 when I am a 4 and will need it altered but am scared whether it can even be done so that it looks flattering on me.

The dress is the allure 8526 http://www.allurebridals.com/index.php?id=3&product_id=95

I also am wondering if the square top can be made a little more sweetheart?

I'm in a minor panic so any advice or suggestions will help.

I am worried about the cost and possibility of cleaning and altering since one of the major reasons I picked the dress up was because of the tight budget I am on but also wanted to help the cause.

Can an 8 go to a 4? and will this dress look funny in the process?

thank you

  • I've heard a dress can be altered up to two sizes.  If this is true and the dress has not been altered yet, it may be altered to fit you.  Hopefully having it dry cleaned will be enough to make it look like new again.  Good luck!  I hope everything works out for you!

  • i bought a size ten dress at a charity event and I'm a four, it had a corset and in my case it couldn't be done, but it depends on the dress and on your seamstress. when I looked at my dress alterations it would have been more then the dress cost me ( i paid 500 for it) so now i'm trying to sell it, however alterations and cleaning could be cheaper in your area, and different dresses are harder or easier to take in
  • Altering by two sizes and making it more of a sweetheart should not be a problem. As for dry cleaning: ask on your local board for recommendations for a good dry cleaner. When you take it in, be sure to show them each mark, and warn them that the dress does contain sand.
