Natural toothpaste?

My derm suggested natural toothpaste to help my chronicly dry lips.  They're really bad, and nothing helps them.  He said that the artificial flavors and chemicals in commercial toothpaste can be really drying and irritating to your lips, especially if you have sensitive skin (which I do).  I really like my strong fake minty flavor though, and natural toothpastes kind of scare me :(

Any suggestions?  Does anyone use one that they really like?

  • I tried Burt's Bees, and it was NOT the "bees knees." It was pretty awful. I bought toothpaste that afternoon.

    I think I've heard Tom's is good.

I'm glad you said that, because left to my own devices that would have been my first choice because I LOVE Burt's products.

  • Maybe check out etsy, I know thats sorta sketchy but im sure you could find something good. How much water do you drinka  day? I find my lips get really dried out if I havnt had enough water.
  • I haven't tried any, but I always see that sort of thing at the fancy organic grocery store near my work.  But then again, online shopping in Canada is the suck.  I like the Amazon idea.

Me too, even now im all gross feeling on my lips and I need lip gloss. I only use the blistex lip conditioner because my lips are sensitive to most other ones. If its flavoured, I get a rasha nd that aint pretty.

Regardless, we could all see that. Acknowledging it just makes them keep going.
  • Something I've tried that works really well is using a toothbrush or even a face scrub to exfoliate them. Then dab on some vaseline to wear overnight. You should be in good shape in the morning.

Batha and Body Works has an excellent scrub/moisturizing combo.  It's in a tube, like chapstick, but part is a sugar scrub, and the other half is a soothing balm.  FI has chapped lips 90% of the year and this is the only stuff that consistently works.

I use Aquaphor about 17 times a day, and definitely at night.  When they're not super peely (because they get peely and ouchy), but just dry and gross I do use the toothbrush (or washcloth) to exfoliate them a little, but in the winter they get too cracked to do that.

  • My mom has used Tom's for a few years and she really likes it. She said she got used to the kinda 'off'-ness of it after a few uses.

Aw, I do feel your pain thought. In the beginning of the week my bottom lip was so dry that it cracked right in the middle and started bleeding. I had to slather on lip balm every 20 minutes for 2 days before it healed.

Yeah, mine do that.  And of course, I pick at them, which is disgusting and makes it so much worse.  I've gotten a LOT better at not doing that though.  I thought when I stopped picking my lips would get 10x better and....nope.  They still hate me.  Year round too, though they don't crack and bleed in summer, thank god.

  • Yeah in the summer I'm all good. But from November through March I'm screwed. I've been using the Burt's Bees lip balm and love it. It's all minty and makes your lips all tingly and cool feeling.
  • So it sounds liek Tom's gets the popular vote!  Thanks ladies :)

  • My sis swears my Tom's. I've also heard of using sugar water as a natural lip exfoliate (makes sense as it will taste ok if it gets in your mouth). And I am in love with the Aveeno lip moisturize with SPF. I got it over the summer when my lips got sun burned and have been using it ever since. It works really well. My friend said she uses the Neosporin lip balm when her lips are really bad and it works wonders too.

  • LTZ, Burt's has a new mango nourishing balm out that I got today.  So far I like it.

Thanks Cullen!  I've tried Aveeno and a couple different kinds of the Neosporin and they're all meh to me.

Anytime. I wish the Aveeno had a better flavor to it. I miss the days of Dr. Pepper lip balm when I was younger lol. I would try the vaseline before going to bed idea too, I've heard that works pretty well in general for dry skin (hands, feet, elbows, whatever).

I had to put on lip balm while reading this thread, it made my lips feel self conscious heh.
