Baby Naming & Siblings

I learned earlier this week that FI's sister is having a baby girl. Very exciting!

Anyway, FI had told me some of the names his sister had mentioned to him. They are perfectly nice names, but still made me ask 'really?'. I wonder if this name is too trendy while  all the other names in their family are quite traditional.

Out of curiousity, should sibling names be similar in anyway? What is your experience?

No idea how serious they are about this name, but it is Trinity.

I think siblings having too close to the same names is kind of strange. I know people who their whole family has the same first letter. . . all J's for example. I do think it'd be odd though to have a "John," a "Sara" and then name the third kid "Willow."

FI and I have thought about names that are a little "different" . . . Fun fact, he wants them to have awesome names so that if they become professional snowboarders they'll sound cool when they get announced. No, I'm not kidding.

ETA: My step-sister named her daughter Trinity. Her older brother is named Darryl (after his dad, who goes by DJ).

I really like names that can be shortened to nick-names, but still sound nice in their full version for professional situations.  FI and I have talked about Gabriel (informally Gabe) and Benjamin (informally Ben) for boys.  The only girl's name we've ever agreed on is Juliet.  Not because of the character.  We just like the sound of the name.

In this case the sibling would be Emma.

Just be careful with the whole nickname thing. It's been kind of frustrating to me my entire life b/c my nickname is one that is more uncommon for my full name, and it take people forever to learn my name and get it right.

Are you friends with the Duggars?

I'm Holly, my sister is Heather.

She's older and mom liked the name.  When I was born, she was freaked out because I 'looked more like a Heather', even though I didn't favor my sister.

She was stuck and tried to leave the hospital without naming me and the nurses wouldn't let her.  So on the way out the door, they handed her a baby name book, and she looked through the Hs.  Well, Heather is a bush, Holly is a tree, so that's what I was named...in the middle of a hospital hallway so mom and dad could go home.

But, I love that our names have something in common.  It's a cool thing to share.

My mother and all of her siblings have a last and first name that start with T; Tim, Terry, Tam, Tina, Todd, and Tricia.  My high school BF and his brothers were all first and last names starting with B; Ben, Brian, and Brett.

Luckily my parents didn't fall for that trap but my brothers and sister have kind of simple names; Maegan, James, and Nicholas.   While mine is very different and I've never met anyone else in person who has it so I've always felt a little left out and 98% of people who pronounce it from a written standpoint pronounce it wrong.

So coming from someone who felt like the odd man out, I would probably try and name my children somewhere in between those examples.

ETA:  I decided to just go with it and post my name it's Elise.  Pronounced E lease as in leasing an apartment.  I love it and wouldn't have it any other way, but it's still annoying to have had to, and continue to, correct just about everyone who tries to say or spell it!

I think it is fine to a point. Like Wrkn and her sister. When you have two children, maybe even three I don't think it sounds funny to have the same first initial. But once you get to have more than that, like 5 or 6, it gets a little out of hand.

I don't mind when families use the same letter, but it bugs me when they make names that aren't supposed to use that letter fit their naiming strategy as relatives of mine have done. I'm sorry but Chloe is fine, not Khloe and Connor is fine not Konnor and Carson is fine, not Karson, really? Was it really necessary to make everyone mess up spelling your kids' name because you wanted a K?

My sis and I are named after random obscure people from the bible.

I want to name a daughter after my grandmother, Elizabeth, and call her Libby, but if my cousin and his wife have a girl first they've already told me they are taking that name. (The horror!)

I also like Millicent for a girl, shortened would be Milli. Also, I have always like Ethan and Cole for boys.

I don't remember what BF likes, that conversation was ages ago.

My mom named me after my grandfather because Courtney was his last name (my mom's maiden name) and then when my sister came along decided that Lindsay fit well. I love how our names fit together, and I totally agree that it's better when names make sense together.

My issue is that I like somewhat different names, not totally crazy, but not run of the mill. But BF wants to name our first son, if we have one, after his best friend who died - Aaron. My favorite girl's names are Reese and Remi (purely coincidence that they both start with R). They don't sound right with Aaron to me....I want to girlify it as Aryn and use it as a middle name, I guess we'll see what happens!

As for matchy name.  My brothers and I were almost all matching.  The last brother escaped the name Robert by me pulling the name Justin out the the hat instead.  But my other brother's name starts with an R and so does my name.   I feel like more than three is a little much.  But I don't think too much about odd names because I think they are cool :)

I can't imagine another way in which to pronounce your name.  I find it odd that you get so many mispronunciations.

My brothers and I all have "normal" names.  Stephanie, Joseph ("Joey"), Steven.  My mom and stepdad adopted a little boy a few years ago and named him Dylan.  It still goes with our names, but is the less common one.

I would love to name a little boy (if I have one) my maiden name (err... my current last name I suppose I should say). <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />  It could also be a girl's name, but I like it better for a boy.

I, personally, like the idea of naming a little girl Elizabeth and calling her Libby.  I think that is super cute.  I have always wanted to name a little girl Lissi Belle, but I doubt BF would get on board with that one.

My brothers names start with a C, the other a K, and then here I am the only P. Our names have nothing in common.

However my Brother K's girlfriends family is all M's. Her sisters name is Mica (Mee-kah)  and she married a man named Micah. People always joke that they should name their future kid Mocha. My brothers girlfriends name is Mattie and my boyfriends name is Matt. We always joke they're going to leave us for each other so that they can have a Mica & Micah, and a Matt & Mattie. Yeah. Lame, I know.

My dad REALLY wanted a boy. My sisters name is Cristina and shortened to a boy name, (Cris) and I was nearly named Samantha to be shortened to Sam...Idk where they came up with my name because my mom wanted to name me rachel? My brother got the hand me down Sam though. :)

We all have decently traditional/biblical names. They weren't common when we were in school, but they've been very popular at one time or another. I will say its nice to not be the 6th Ashley in class while I was in school.

SO's parents gave he and his sister American names that reflected their born Korean names since they were adopted. I thought that was sweet.

My siblings and I don't have matchy-names. I think we all have somewhat uncommon names, but not obscure. No same first letter, not even from the same root language... but I don't know, they don't clash in my mind.

I'm a firm believer in naming your child when you meet them. Not while pregnant. I realize lots of people do, and that's perfectly fine, but it's just not my thing. So, I see nothing wrong with having one kid named "James" and one named "Willow" or something. I mean... their personalities may turn out to be just as different, so why not?

My parents named me after my grandma and my aunt and I love that we all share the same name, even though we all go by different nicknames (Abby, Betsy, and Liz). My brother's name and mine are matchy at all. He is Jack and I'm Elizabeth, although if he had been a girl he would've been Emma so then it would've been 2 'e' names but that is just coincidence.

I do think it's a little strange when parents start doing strange spellings or making up names just to fit a pattern. BF and I have talked about names and we both love Chloe and Juliet (Jules for short) but I tend to like more old fashioned names whereas he likes more modern ones so it's hard to find ones we both like. i don't think we will try to fit our kids names into any sort of pattern.

Awww, but your name is so cute!  But yeah, we would want the full names and nicknames to be a little more... obvious.

For my part, I will never give one of my children a name starting with "M".  It sounds like a weird peeve, I know, but whenever I introduce myself and say "Hi, I'm Macy," the 'm' sounds run together and I end up hearing "Lacey?  Stacey?  Acey?  What did you say?"  I've gotten into the habit of introducing myself with "My name is..." to avoid the problem, but it sucks to have to think about it.

I only have a younger brother and I don't think our names "match". My name is weird and uncommon (Belinda) and his name is very traditional sounding (Fredrick, nicknamed Ricky). I don't know why it bothers me, but it does. Probably because I don't like my name (I get all sorts of variations and spellings that aren't even close).

I really do like sibling names that "match". Not in a cutesy way, but in a flowy way (for example, my father's name was David and his brother is Seth. It's a nice pair of names). I don't plan on having more than one kid, but if I did, I would probably take the off-chance of naming a future sibling into consideration.

For my part, I will never give one of my children a name starting with "M".  It sounds like a weird peeve, <strong>I know, but whenever I introduce myself and say "Hi, I'm Macy," the 'm' sounds run together and I end up hearing "Lacey?  Stacey?  Acey?  What did you say?"</strong>  I've gotten into the habit of introducing myself with "My name is..." to avoid the problem, but it sucks to have to think about it.

I have this problem too. People never get my name right. Maybe is has to do with the ending "asey"?

Also BF has a very nontraditional name. He and his father are the only two in the US that have it. It is an Albanian name. His father and brother both named their first boys with the same name (so SK Jr.) BF wanted to continue that, but he hates his name sometimes and I don't want to do that to my child. I have told him that I am all about using the American translation though, which would be Alexander.

ETA: the point to that was that both BF and I have nontraditional names, so I will most likely stick to that if we have children.
