Happy Friday, Snarkies!

Re: Happy Friday, Snarkies!

  • I wish my FMIL drank, that would make life so much easier.... As it is I still tend to drink in Her presence... Don't get me wrong, she's a nice lady, just born without a 'social filter'. Yikes sometimes! My favorite way to cook Brussel sprouts is fried with bacon, mmmmm bacon! It makes everything taste good!

  • tlc - Do you have the gumbo recipe? Ever since H was working down in New Orleans he's been begging me to make some.

    Posted by tlc35[/QUOTE]

<div>This looks tasty! I haven't tried much southern cooking yet, but I've now pinned this away for future use. And hopefully that future will be soon.</div><div>
</div><div>H likes to call everything I cook by the wrong name. For example, anything with rice is called gumbo. Things with noodles are called goulash. One pot thrown together amalgamation meals are gruel. He does this lovingly though and loves my cooking.</div><div>
</div><div>Therefore, I've been wanting to make gumbo for a long time but many of the recipes I read call for seafood which H can't eat. Or is it jambalaya that has seafood? This seems perfect though and the fact that it's a crock pot recipe makes it even better. </div><div>
</div><div>ETA: I'm not sure how readily available okra is around here up north. Can you suggest a substitute for it? I know it's not anything like it, but how about zucchini? </div><div>Also it says to add <em>cooked chicken</em>? And then cook for 4-5 hours more? Seems like that would dry it out a lot. </div>

The 2 most common types of gumbo are seafood and chicken and sausage. I was worried about overcooking the chicken too but it came out fine. I actually put the chicken in about halfway through but only because I had to go to the store to get chicken. Jambalaya also contains rice but is usually spicer then gumbo and less liquid. ETA. You could probably substitute any green veggie for the okra. Maybe you could get frozen okra up north.

  • Dangit!  A B sighting, and a Jackie sighting, and I'm late!  I'm sorry about your MIL, B.

    Hello!

I love those gifs, Anna.  And I want that dog too.  Nala is nowhere near that clever.

Brussel sprouts are fabulous.  Roast in the oven with a little olive oil, garlic, and chopped onion.  DH won't eat them, though, so that means more for me.

Busy week with DH being OOT and having to deal with the crazy neighbor meltdown and carbon monoxide poisoning scare by myself.  I'm glad he's home, although the first thing he asked was whether or not I had called to make the chimney sweep appointment.  NO, I've been a little busy with the police and emergency utility workers.  I'll get to the chimney sweep later.

  • Hi Les!  Thank you.

Carbon Monoxide scare?  I hope everyone is alright.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • We're ok, thanks.  The CO alarms went off, and I called the utility company to check it out.  Turns out the exhaust vent in the roof was blocked, and everything that shoud have vented to the outside was recirculating in the house.  Prolonged exposure to the existing CO levels in the house would have killed all of us.

Everyone please check your CO detectors, and replace if necessary.  We didn't consider the danger very seriously until now.

  • That is scary.  I'm glad it wasn't any worse.

    Purrrrrr!

    How goes the big swim?
  • Since MIL passed I haven't had time for the pool :(  I swam 2 nights prior but didn't have time to update the blog and now I can't remember how much I swam so I guess that was a free day.  I'm hoping things calm down soon and I can get back into the pool.

  • Well, I went and did my errands. I still have to drive to the burbs in a few hours to take my friend dinner. She had a baby last week. So this will be a fun traffic adventure...
