Cop sued for asking driver for date after ticketing her.

Hi! I've never posted one of these posts with articles, but read this one and thought i'd share, especially since tere was talk of silly lawsuits earlier. http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/cop-issues-speeding-ticket-asks-driver-date-she-002427538.html Personally, I think the lady's a greedy b!tch. Maybe he did use his position to find her, but I would never think of suing. Just say no. Now the poor guy is humiliated and I would think his job would be in jeopardy now. I just can't see how someone could be so mean.

Re: Cop sued for asking driver for date after ticketing her.

• I read this yesterday. I agree about this just being another example of the crazy, overly litigious society we live in. But at the same time, it would seriously freak me the eff out if a cop used his job as access to my personal information and basically stalked me. That's fucking scary and he should be fired.

Um, you mean how someone could be so creepy?
It would have been one thing if he asked her out when he pulled her over. But hunting her down and leaving a note.. CREEPY.

• I read this article too! Honestly, I'd report him to his supervisor. It's an abuse of authority IMO. Plus what kind of an idiot tickets the chick he's about to ask out!?

• I do think the lawsuit is excessive, but I think the cop should lose his job over this. It's an invasion of privacy, and a completely inappropriate way to use the information his job supplies him. I have access to patient information at the hospital I work at, but if I looked into any of that stuff for any reason beyond what I needed to do my job my ass would be fired faster than I can blink. I should not have to worry about a cop tracking me down because he finds me attractive. It's creepy and stalkerish, and not in any way romantic or cute.
image
• That is totally inappropriate, poor boundaries, and an abuse of his power. I would report him to his supervisor for sure.

I wouldn't sue, but damn if I wouldn't make sure he got in trouble. Completely unacceptable.

Yes! All of this.

Hell I was pissed off when a T-Mobile douche looked up my phone # to contact me. If a cop used his resources to track me down I'd flip out. Law enforcement should be trustworthy people you can count on not someone you fear is going to use your info for their personal gain.

Ha, okay, my friend had that same response.

Also, I can see te creepy aspect, but, maybe I'm a hopeless romantic, I think it's the kind of thing you see in the movies all the time and usually works. Maybe he didn't show the best judgement in believing that and trying it out himself, but I don't think he should be humiliated on a national level or sued. I guess it also depends on what he is actually like (looks, personality), I still think its a little cute. This may be judgeworthy and superficial, but if he was a hot cop, would she sue? Or go out with him?
image
• If the cop had really wanted to ask her out, he should have ripped up the ticket and asked her out then and there...not resort to being a stalker-creep.

I think it would have been inappropriate one way or the other though. If he was in his civies and walking around town and bumped into her that would be one thing, but he definitely abused his position of authority.

I agree with PP that she should have just reported the cop to a supervisor instead of suing though...
image
• And also? "I would think his job is in jeopardy now." It 100% should be. There is NO WAY he shouldn't at least be suspended. If it's not in their policies that that's not ok, it's definitely ethically not ok.

In one of my jobs, I had access to every criminal record in the state of MN, including arrests that were never charged. If I was caught looking through those for any reason besides what I needed for my job, I would have been out the door so fast.

• I'd totally sue. Because I want a new computer and I don't want to pay for it myself.

But really, this is pretty sneaky. He'd have been better off just straight up asking for a date and giving her a warning, or something. Idk.

In the movie though, he wouldn't have given her a ticket and would have asked her out then and there. If she thought the cop was hot she would have flirted a little or something. I doubt this girl gave this guy any reason to write a creepy letter and put it on her car. Not cute.

Threadjack, but I have a funny story about this.

My best friend and I went to see The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 together and there's this one part where the guy makes this really romantic rooftop date for the girl. He has music playing and it's all really sweet. We were like, if this were real life he'd be living in his mother's basement and playing "Ooh baby I like it raw" when she walked in. The thirteen year olds behind us didn't get why we were dying laughing.

Actually, a friend of mine met her H this way. She's a paramedic and the ambulance she was driving was involved in an accident. The first cop on scene... yeah. She married him.

ETA - It might have been a little inappropriate, but this chick is completely overreacting.

Your friend's story IS cute and sounds like a movie. I imagine that they started talking that day, maybe even grabbed a coffee or something after. (?)

I think the difference is that this cop used his position to find where she lives and left her a creepy note. Clearly there weren't the immediate sparks that flew when you friend and her H met. KWIM?

While I think the lawsuit might be a bit much, I totally think he shouldbe humiliated on a national level, because 1) what he did is roughly a bazillion miles over the line of acceptable behavior for somebody in his position, and 2) I hope to God that he does get punished and it sends a very clear message to any other person planning on abusing their power in that way how unacceptable sh!t like that is.

• From the article: Paredes claims that the note caused her to "suffer great fear and anxiety." In the lawsuit, which seeks unspecified payments in damages, saccording to the Associated Press, she alleges that Collins used his position as a police officer to "manipulate" her into going out with him. Collins declined to comment to the Associated Press.

The bolded are GROSS overreactions. The suing is more of an "abuse of power" than what the cop did. Yeah, I can see the romanticism behind it. Honestly, he would have been better of trying to "accidentally" bump into her at a bar or something and been like "oh yeah hey!" In the end, I don't think his intentions were bad and he certainly wan'st manipulating her. Manipulating would have been if he tried it BEFORE giving her the ticket and then not giving it to her if she said yes. It still was a misuse of the information at hand, which he should have gotten in trouble for. But suing is way over the top IMO.
