Creative favor ideas?

Ok...so my mother is driving me ABSOLUTELY INSANE and insists that we do actual favors for our guests for the wedding. She just went to my cousin's wedding last weekend and is now in like crazy mode trying to compete with what they had for theirs. I've told her on multiple occasions that I don't want to do favors, but she's not budging. I wanted to replace favors with a late night snack, but she thinks the guests should have something to bring home with them. I'm not a fan of traditional favors, and the ones she has come up with are just too expensive and not at all something that I would want to give my guests. Does anyone have any creative favor ideas (preferably something that would be inexpensive and not very time consuming)??

Cookies packaged up in celophane or wax paper bags and tied with ribon would be lovely, and pretty cheap/easy to do.  Edibles are good because they can be enjoyed and not just get thrown away later on.  Or if you want to go in a non-edible direction, votive candles with a band with your names/date would be lovely, too.  They'd be time consuming to make, though, but fairly cheap.

For ours, we're having a candy bar.  I'm also making molded  truffles for each guest I'm going to package up in pairs in little boxes with ribbon.  I've got a business during the holidays when I make/sell them, and they're a huge hit.  I've already got most of the supplies (will need to find "A" and "J" molds with scrolling or have them made), but the rest is really easy, at least for me.  I'm one of those Martha Stewart types.

I'd also be happy to take any orders for anyone else who'd like to do the same thing, at any time of year.

We're doing little bride and groom boxes with candy inside. We haven't decided what kind of candy, but I'm voting for chocolate. My mom had the idea of a Hershey's Kiss, Hug, and Bliss, and a Dove Promise. I can't decide if that's a bit too corny for me, but we'll see.

Another idea we talked about was sparklers for everyone since it's the weekend of the 4th.

I'm not a huge fan of non-edible favors since the ones I've seen are always cheap plastic things you immediately throw away. Also, I just really like candy, so I'm always happy when people give me candy. (Yup, I'm actually 5)

We're making CDs and packaging them in cardstock that I'm printing out. Possibly boring, but I didn't want to invest a ton into favors. I've also thought about The Knot favor shop's hot sauce, as FI and I are both crazy for hot and spicy food. I have no idea if it is the suck or not, but it seems fun. Not wedding-porn-worthy, but "us".

Ha. I'm cheap.  We did the personalized matches from theknot's online store.  I didn't really want to do favors at all... but hey! Everyone needs a match at some point or another, right?

They're in our colors and it says "the perfect match" with our names and date.  Cheesy? yup. But we love it!

Aren't moms fun when it comes to weddings? Definitely have a few 'to dos' because of my mom, too. :)

I have heard of couples that give everyone a seed packet...with some kind of phrase relating to the "planting of a new life together" or something like that:)

Seeds are really inexpensive and that's one thing I would enjoy getting.

I also loved getting a CD at a wedding once like the PP mentioned...but the bride told me it took her a really really really long time to burn them all, so I'm not saying it's a quick project.

I'm really tempted to do mix CDs... but am kind of scared by the not-entirely-legal aspect of it. While I don't think anyone's going to prosecute you for it, it's technically against copyright law to produce and distribute a mix CD... even if you're not collecting any sort of profit. I did, however, find a few really awesome websites where you can buy personalized sticky labels and cute little vellum envelopes for fairly cheap. And depending on the speed of your computer and cd drive, burning them might not be TOO time-consuming.

I personally disagree with the whole you-can't-go-wrong-with-edible-favors myth. I rarely ever feel like eating them (it doesn't help that they're almost always stale) and never really see the point.

So, unless we decide to live dangerously and make CDs... I think I'll be skipping favors entirely.

I had decided to not do favors then 3 weeks ago FI's mom was like you have to do favors which sorta stressed me out a bit.  I got black pillow boxes from Michaels.  Used a coupon so it was $32 for 200 boxes. The boxes were already assembled and just needed to be closed so they were super easy. Then we put 5 hershey kisses in each box.  We got the kisses from Target and they were $7 per bag and we got 4 bags so $30 with tax.  To fancy them up we got ribbon to tie around the box...not sure on the price of the ribbon as FI picked up the ribbon.   I think we spent about $100 on the favors.

We're not doing favors, but the candy bar might be a good compromise, since its a snack and a favor.

Something we didn't do, but I think would have been cute and cheap to make a recipe book.  Take 5 recipes from your family, 5 from his, and then 5 that you like to make together.  Put them together in one of those little flip photo books you can get at a Dollar Store (or maybe cheaper online).  Sort of an introduction of each others families to each other.

Myself, I was a little favor crazy.  We:

Put caramel kisses on all the tables (they were orange and brown foil, so they matched our colors)

Had a popcorn bar for a late night snack

Little bags sugar cookies cut like leaves (these were supposed to go to the hotel, but wound up at the reception...everyone loved them though)

Did homemade canned applebutter, strawberry jam, and maple syrup (rather time-consuming).

Yeah, I took a bunch of Intellectual Property classes in law school.  It violates copyright law.

We are doing T-shirts with one of our engagement pictures on it. It is a really fun, cute , and different idea. My dad owns silk-screen machines, so we can make them ourselves. I think it is only like $1 per shirt if they are white, and $2-3 if they are color (depending on the color). I am sure you can find somewhere that would make them cheap for you. Or maybe we could help you out if you were interested :)

We're doing cookies. My grandma is making my favorite and his favorite cookies and packaging them and putting a cute sticker on them. It's reasonably cheap and my grandma is an AWESOME baker and wants a job so it's perfect... for us anyways.

We ordered personalized shot glasses from http://www.barproducts.com/index.php?utm_medium=Bookmark They came out to be less than 50 cents a glass.  We are filling them with Jordan Almonds and M&M's.   We will wrap them up with cellophane and ribbon.  I know some people will leave them behind and I am fine with that.  Most of the people I have talked to have told me that they can always use another shot glass around the house.  Either way my mom wanted a favor that they can bring home and I wanted to give candy so we compromised and did both using the shot glass as the "box".

    Thanks for the tips ladies!
Clare13, I really like the shot glass idea, especially since they can also double as votive holders for the non-drinking types...I may be seriously considering that one since it seems easy enough (aka, like zero work for me!).

Another idea I saw today that I liked was this: (Except I would stamp a design vs gocco)

Bimbi- The same company actually has 3oz shot glass that are shaped liked votive holders.  We decided to go with the 1.5oz ones but the are only about 3 cents different.  And I do have to say it was very easy.  I think we designed and ordered it all in an hour and had them within 2 weeks on our doorstep.  Worked great and was very easy.

I am in love with Candyland popcorn, but I didn't know how to make favors with it.  I spoke to them and they said that if I drop off the ribbons and thank you tags, they will make up as many little bags (their smallest clear bag size) as I need, wrap the ribbons and tie the thank you cards to the bag. And their smallest bag is, I think about $1.25.

My honey likes to brew beer - so we might do that, a bride's and a groom's brew for each adult of age.  He also collects and restores old cars, so we are picking up classic matchbox cars for the kids.  The wedding is vintage styled with swing dancing and I have a lot of girlfriends who all plan on wearing vintage or vintage inspired outfits.  I will make clip in hair flowers  and leave out on a large tray or bowl with an antique mirror above.

I still love the idea of a cd.  A couple of my friends have done this and I loved it.  Another had tea in tins at each place - husband was british.  Another had lottery tickets - which sounds cheesy until I won a small prize.
