Does EVERYONE do STDs nowadays?

I know that save-the-dates are fairly new as far as the wedding routine goes. I've been to probably 8 weddings in my life and I've only gotten an STD card for one of them. I guess I don't really see the point, because probably 75 percent of the people we're inviting already know when the wedding date is because they've asked, and it's also permanently posted on my facebook page (in that section under the profile pic). I know people plan vacations and things far ahead of time, but STDs generally just seem like kind of a waste of money, since the majority of people already know the date. What are your thoughts?

One of the advantages of STDs aside from letting people know the date is letting them know that they will be INVITED. It's on your FB page, but I'm assuming you're not going to be inviting everyone on your friends list. You don't have to do STDs if you don't want to, they're definitely not required, but they're recommended if you'll have many guests coming from OOT that will have to make travel arrangements. We are, so we're doing them.

I actually had kind of the same thought as you. However, my wedding is over July 4th weekend of next year, so maybe it is a little more necessary for me. Also, FI and I love taking and sharing pics, so we will put one of our e-pics on ours. I figure we will have fun designing them and our family members will enjoy recieving them. Since they seem to be relatively inexpensive, we are going to do them.

I am not doing them, and don't see the point of them -the most important people that need to know, already know and know they're invited!

If you're that concerned about people having enough notice, or inviting a lot of OOT guests, then ensure your invites go out sooner.....seems simple to me and it's what I'm doing!

We did an emailed STD because it was a destination wedding. Many people booked their travel well before the invitations went out and were able to get really good deals.

Since I didn't have my guest list together enough until it was too late, we sent an e-STD through our wedding site on weddingwindow.com

I've heard that you only send them out for destination weddings, but since my FI and I are from different states, we'll be sending them out to make sure people can make travel accomodations.

We're not doing them. Like a PP said, people who are most important to us know when and where the wedding will be. We just plan to send out the invitations earlier than normal.

I think they are a good idea if the majority of your guest list is from out of state. That way they have more than enough time to make travel arrangements. Otherwise I think they would be unnecessary.

I didn't do STDs, but I did send guests an email letting them know the date and hotel block information, and providing a link to our website.

I did them because I wasn't inviting ALL my cousins and their families. Only those I'm still in contact with were invited. If all those cousins I never see or talk to made plans to come and weren't invited, things would not have been pleasant!

Nope.

We didn't do them because they are sent out at the 6-month mark, and our engagement was shorter than six months. We just sent invitations.

And in the region where I live, some people over 40 think STDs are very pretentious. Demanding that the recipient block off a weekend six months away is considered very cheeky, very selfish.

If only because the STD takes away anyone's excuse for NOT attending. Like you couldn't say you must miss the wedding because of a work commitment, because the STD told you to take off that weekend SIX MONTHS AGO. Like you couldn't say you must miss the wedding because of another commitment, because the STD told you to block that weekend SIX MONTHS AGO.

They are totally optional!

I did them because our wedding is the weekend after Thanksgiving and we have a lot of OOT guests. If neither would have been the case, we definitely would not have bothered.

My wedding is on a Friday in November, so I figured it would be polite to send out STDs. After reading some of these posts, I'm having second thoughts. Should I just send them to the out-of-town people? (We have a lot) Or do we send them to everyone? I'll probably get some for my close family- as a momento... or is that corny?

If you think your guests would benefit from a Save the Date (their Fridays are usually busy, etc) then definitely do them. I don't see the harm - I'd much rather know in advance so that I can mark it in my weekly planner. :)
