Wino evening roundup

Re: Wino evening roundup

  • Hi ladies!  I'm here and just finished reading what you all have been saying so far.  You guys are all making me feel so bad about the financial situation I'm in right now :-(

I am trying so hard to pay off my CC, but every time I make a big dent in it something happens that sets me back.  It totally sucks, especially because I know it is my own fault.

  • I have never figured out why we wait either. This year I know we will not be bc we desperately need the money.
  • welcome to my life shortee :)  we just had a 2K vet bill for my dog and 1K for H's hospital stay.  That's 3K i could have put towards my ccs.

  • Oh shortee I understand! As soon as we get engaged, our fridge and computer go out. Then the furnace was acting up. Now that I have a plan for my CC, the belts on my car are majorly squealing as are my brakes.  It's like financial murphy's law.
  • Well, my state is broke.  H had an IOU tax return a couple years ago that CA just honored a couple months ago.  California is going down the pipes.
  • H's doctor bills from his trip to the ER in October was another set back.  I know its life, but then I am bad and I compare myself to others our age who have a house, very little to no debt, etc and it makes me wanna cry.
  • Illinois is right behind you Mica :)  I really want to leave this state, or at least Cook County.

  • GA has a funky way of doing the state income tax here. It made my head spin last year, esp living half of 2009 in different states, so I just let H do it for me and I signed where I needed to.
  • KJB, If that were me that 3K would have been put ON my cc.  With J being unemployed and in school full time I have practically no savings.  I do have about 10% of each paycheck directly deposited into my savings, but I inevitably need to dip into at some point to help pay the bills.

I opened up a 2nd savings account because J and I wanted a new couch (the dog and cat were slowly destroying the one we had).  I was good and never touched it, other than to put money into it every week.  Then my parents invited themselves over for Thanksgiving and since slipcovers, etc didn't seem to work it was time to buy a new couch.  Of course I didn't have enough saved up yet so I was able to pay for 1/2 and opened store credit for the other 1/2.  So now, I not only have less savings, but I have more monthly overhead.

  • Birdie's right, it's totally financial murphy's law.  I guess we can all just do the best we can with what we've got, realizing that every choice has consequences and go with it, you know?  It's people like my ILs who complain all the time about how they have no money and then blame anyone and everyone but themselves for it that drive me crazy.  People who own it, whether it's things in their control or not, are just normal people living life as far as I'm concerned

Missy and Kelly, are the injured/sick in your lives doing ok now?  Medical bills suck big ones.  They've got you over a barrel with those.

<div>The one good thing about J being an unemployed student is that when he ended up in the hospital in Oct, they gave him a form to fill out where they would cover all of the hospital costs (20k).  We still need to pay the surgeon and anesthesiologist which is about 3k.</div>

  • Well, H's hospital bills went on the cc, then I used my HSA account to get reimbursed for that.  For the vet bills, I opened a CareCredit card, which is 0% interest if we pay it in 12 months.
And Missy, if it makes you feel any better, I wish we had never bought a house.  I wish we were renting.  Our house is worth a little more than half of what we owe on it.  Fantastic :)

  • Drama - yes, everyone is ok.  H had a kidney stone which resulted in 3 days in the hopital and surgery to remove said stone, but he's fine now.  That happened 4 days before we left on our honeymoon, so i'm glad it didn't happen in the middle of the caribbean ona cruise ship.
Dog is doing well.  ACL is healing :)

  • Drama - thanks for asking. H is doing okay except for the occasional flare ups. He basically woke up one morning and couldn't move his right arm or turn his neck. I thought it was a stroke, I didn't know. So I got him in the car and took him to the ER. They told him that the has the neck of a 50 year old and he is only 29. He has degenerative arthritis and when he went to the ER it was a major flare up.

The thing is that we have insurance, but his company just last year went to one of those HSA things. And as everyone knows, hospital bills are outrageous and they didn't even keep him. So, needless to say, we didn't have enough in the account to pay for the bills (bc of the high deductible) so we had to pay them out of pocket. That royally sucked. I am not so sure about this HSA thing, but I guess I better get used to it bc I think it is here to stay.
  • And KJB - yes, that does make me feel better. I know it will happen in due time, I just need to be patient and I don't always have it when it comes to these sorts of things.
  • I would love to own a house, but I know there is absolutely no chance of that especially while I live in LA.  I do want to rent a house, though.  I need a yard for the dog.  Poor thing with no yard :-(

  • I've had an HSA for 4 years Missy.  It does kinda suck.  But my other options also suck.  I ended up in the ER on year Christmas day - so I met ALL of my 3K deductible the last week of the year.  That sucked.

We have a 3k deductible, too. We don't normally go to the dr's unless I get bronchitis or a sinus infection, so that is why we had to pay that out of pocket.

4 years, I didn't know they had been around that long. Maybe they have just gotten more widespread in the past year or two.

Edit: I remember now you being in the hospital, but can't remember what for. Its not important, just glad you are better now.
  • How does an HSA work?  I've heard the term a lot, but I'm not familiar with the logistics.

  • Luckily I work with drs and can get prescriptions if I'm really sick :) and i can avoid a drs visit

  • They suck, thats how they work.

They typically have really high deductibles. And money is deposited from each paycheck into a seperate health savings acct (HSA). It comes with a debit card for which you can use to pay for prescriptions and doctors visits. We don't have a co-pay, which took some getting used to, we just receive a bill later saying this much was applied bc we met the deductible and this is how much you owe out of the HSA.

So if you have a lot of medical bills and don't have a lot in the HSA, you are essentially screwed.

This is how mine works:<div>I pay $73.65 a payperiod.  I elect to put $25 into my HSA account a payperiod.  My work pays $36.25 into my HSA every payperiod (r month, I'm not sure).  </div><div>My deductible is no $2500.  After that it's 100% coverage.  My yearly gyne visit is the only thing covered.</div>

  • H opted to not have his employer contribute bc if he did, then he would not be able to take it with him should he leave the company.

  • My organization recently started offer to cover the whole deductible to get people to enroll in the HSA.  Apparently it's the best deal for employers.  I did the math and realized that doing my company's EPO made more sense for me, though.
  • For me, it actually makes more sense than my other options.  our regular PPO is about $110 a paycheck (just for me)  and the dedictible is $1500.  With only 90% coverage after deductible.

  • We have a yard, but no fence. :( We have to put Oz on a lead when he goes out. He goes crazy at my mom's because he can run around free.

And I'm so glad my company didn't go the HSA route this year. I still don't know how I feel about them either. When I was at my last job I had the option of a PPO or a HSA and I found that I would save more money by being on the PPO because of my regular prescriptions and things like going to a dermatologist and eye doctor, etc.
  • H says it is basically catastrope insurance and I pretty much agree with him. I don't know what we are going to do when we are ready to have kids. I'll really have to read up on maternity care.
  • yep, major collision insrance :)
