Best way to fit a wedding band around an engagement ring - opinions??

My engagement ring is a design based off of the Tiffany Novo, but with 6 prongs.  My jeweler intitally proposed that the wedding band curve around the center prong slightly so that the band would sit flush to the engagement ring.

Now, he's proposed that we instead sand (or some fancier word) the prongs on the engagement ring ever so slightly so that we could make a flat wedding band to sit flush against the engagement ring...  No more curved band or even a band cut down in the center to sit under the engagement ring prong.  It seems like a dangerous proposition to sand down the prongs - does anyone have any feedback?  What would you do?  Have others had this discussion with a good jeweler?  I don't want the center stone to fall out, the engagement ring to look misbalanced, but then again, what if I wear the band alone?

Thank you for any feedback you can offer!
