Honest Opinion: Cupcakes at the Reception?

Re: Honest Opinion: Cupcakes at the Reception?

  • Get mini-cupcakes!  That way your guests can have more than one!
  • Cupcakes are actually perfect for weddings.
    1. guests will have a perfect portion that most will actually eat their piece.
    2. It's much more easier to "please" everyone with different flavors.

A lot of people are starting to have cupcakes for the guests and have a cake for the bridal party.

When you compare the sizes of a cupcake to a wedding cake slice, the cupcake is actually twice the size of what is considered standard for a wedding cake. Wedding cakes are "supposed to" be cut paper thin so you can barely taste anything and unless you cut the cake yourself and order extra, you're out of luck because people have their own idea of what is acceptable and what isn't. Having enough cake to actually taste is considered "unacceptable" by those standards, otherwise people would be allowed larger normal slices on a regular basis without having to specially request it.
  • We're having both, and just doing cupcakes instead of the supplementary sheet cake.  I don't really like cake... but I LOVE cupcakes!  Not much of a filling person, really.

Okay, I lied... I'm really picky about cake... my roommate makes awesome cake.  But it doesn't really have much for filling.

I do love cupcakes, and they are good for people who are worried about germs.  My FSIL eats cupcakes by pulling off the bottom and putting it on top so the frosting is in the middle... and she can eat it like a sandwich.  It's brilliant.
  • great idea! we are having a small cake on top, for cutting, and then we are either going to do cupcakes OR different small dessert. We have a cute french bakery by us that makes bite size fruit tortes, chocolate yummies and lots of others. As for the cupcake getting on the guests outfits, give them the option of taking a small plate and fork! good luck!
  • We are having an 8 inch top tier (which we will cut and serve to the head table) and then we are having mini 3 inch cakes draped in fondant for the guests. They are almost the same size as cupcakes but a bit more formal. We are going to save two of the mini cakes for our 1 year anniversary. Here is a picture of what we are having, except ours will be with all white ribbon and real  red rose petals scattered across for a classy burst of color.

  • I'm actually doing cupcakes for our wedding.  I plan on putting plates and forks on the cake table so people can eat them with a fork, if they prefer.  However, we're not having "traditional" cupcakes...we're having blackbottom cupcakes that essentially have the icing inside and we're doing individual cheesecakes.  And, we're having an outdoor wedding with a more casual feel.
Jacob Alexander was welcomed to the world on March 15th at 9:46 pm weighing 7 lbs 13 oz, 20 inches long.
  • I don't see the problem with cupcakes - if people can't figure out they're perfectly able to eat cupcakes with a fork then that's their issue.

  • I used to work as a manager at an event center where we did lots of weddings. We saw several weddings use cupcakes instead of a regular cake. I think my favorite one had a tower with a very small cake at the top for the bride and groom. They got to do the traditional cake cutting and everyone else got to grab cupcakes as they pleased. The entire party was very outgoing and spent a lot of time on the dance floor so it was perfect for them to be able to grab and go rather than being served dessert.

Personally, I think cupcakes are awesome and might seriously consider doing that when I get closer to that stage of planning for my own wedding. Just be sure to have a stack of plates and forks next to the display to allow for anyone who wants to eat dessert in the more traditional way.

  • I'm not a fan, but I think it depends on the mood of your wedding. I feel like it would not fit in with my wedding, but it might with yours!

  • If assortment of flavors is what you're looking for, you can have several smaller cakes of different flavors.  You could even put a single cake on each table and make each cake a different flavor.
  • You can cut your cupcake as easily as you can cut a slice of cake. It's what you want, so go for it. Have a small cake for cutting.
  • I am having cupcakes, in lieu of a wedding cake. I will be having a groom's cakes, which we will cut for the cake cutting part. I think its fun, plus less expensive than regular slices.
  • I like cupcakes generally but for a more formal reception, I wouldn't want one if I were a guest. They are messy messy... your hands get all goopy taking off the little paper cup, and the crumbs fall all over. Plus if that's the only dessert you have, I'm going to walk away wanting more, which means you end up doubling up on cupcakes to feed the guests properly.

They maybe used to be cheaper than a wedding cake, but with the cost of the tower, the setup and take down of said tower, the quantity required, they often end up MORE expensive than a cake.

With all of that said, pick what feels best for you and what best fits your event.
  • I am not a fan of cupcakes. I prefer the traditional cake myself.
  • Just a thought....
It is easier to "Grab and Go" with cupcakes. Even if there are plates and forks involved, some folks won't use them. If there are several flavors of cupcakes to choose from, you might need more servings than you would with cake due to the fact that they are more convenient to sample.

  • I'm actually having cupcakes at my reception but they will be boxed in a cute package with a ribbon that matches our color scheme and given as favors to our guest.  I've seen alot of cupcakes at weddings lately, and it seems to be the new trend.
  • Which vendor did you use for your cupcakes?
  • cupcakes are awesome!
if you still want something to cut...have the cupcake tower, but with a small cake to cut at the top.

  • We wanted the best of both worlds... a mini tiered cake for cutting and photo ops and cupcakes for the variety and "funness" of it.  There are many elegant ways to decorate cupcakes.  Just have to search for the right pastry chef!
Plus, less waste and guests can "grab and go" if they like!  We are giving little bags for that too.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Honest Opinion: Cupcakes at the Reception? : Agreed. Cupcakes are messy as heck even when you aren't dressed up. It could be argued that a large number of cupcake shops have fillings in them, but most places actually don't. People do like filling with their cake. Also, some cupcake shops will serve them on a plate with a fork, but from what I understand, that is incredibly rare.

I agree. Cupcakes are messy and childish. They remind me of a birthday party - not a wedding, and in my opion do not belong at a wedding.
  • I think it's a great idea! My fiance and I are considering it! Where I live it comes out to be cheaper because you don't have to pay that cake cutting fee! Also, I have been to many weddings, and by the time you finish eating food during the cocktail hour and main entree's you really don't eat the cake. People usually have about half a cake left, or they take one bite and don't like the filling!
  •  If you are having a fun wedding, that is not a sit down dinner, but celebration and dancing, then cupcakes are perfect! As others have said it depends on the style of your wedding, but cupcakes can be made to fit any style really! Don't worry too much about what people will think. It's your wedding, your money, your day, do what you want to do. Because in the end you want to money you put out to be worth it to YOU!
  • We are having lots of kids and young adults at our reception. So we are doing both then they can pick. The weddings I have seen with cupcakes do look good when they are done right.

  • TEAM CUPCAKE!!!

lol we are doing cupcakes and a small cake for cutting and pictures :-) saves us about $300 to do it this way

[QUOTE]  It's the feeding that's tradition (it's your first "meal" together as a couple), not the cutting.

I LOVE THAT OUR "FIRST MEAL TOGETHER" WILL BE A CUPCAKE!!! what a great way to start our lives!!!

we had planned to have a little cake for cutting, but maybe we wont. it woyld save $ on the decorative knife and server set i wont be able to get rid of afterwards.

and as for the messy comments, a cupcake can be  offered with fork and plate for messy eaters.

  • I am doing the cupcakes!! I am super excited about it,

I feel that they are easier to move around.
I'll be able to cut one of the cupcakes for the "cutting of the cake"
    It's unique.
It makes for a great picture.
I found CUTE cupcake boxes if someone wants to keep it for TO GO!

See! The top of it we'll still be able to save to eat on our 1 year anniversary! =)

  • I think it depends on the type of reception. A night time traditional formal wedding....I say cake all the way. But a fun day ceremony....cupcakes are perfect. Just think about the tone you want to set.

  • I'm doing cupcakes at my wedding too!  I think we're going to just cut a cupcake to feed each other...it's pretty much the same anyway.  I love that having cupcakes makes everything easier, many different flavors, it's less expensive (for the most part) and it's easier for serving, etc.  I say go with your gut, whatever you like is what's most important!

  • I don't like cupcakes.  I think they just cannot equal the look of a nice formal wedding cake.  The only cupcakes I have seen that looked nice enough to be in a wedding were adding up to more money than an actual cake for the same number of people.  It's my opinion and I do realise that there are a lot of people around who just love cupcakes.
