Help finding an engagement ring

Hey everyone -

This is my first post! yay!  My boyfriend of 4+ years took me ring shopping as a surprise date last night.  It was super amazing, but sort of overwhelming.  Nothing really jumped out as something that I would want to wear for the rest of my life.  I've been looking online and I've decided that I love the 'Filigree' sort of look.  Lacey-type setting etc.  I could care less about the size of the center stone, in face, it doesn't even need a center stone - I just want a special setting.  I love the look of the typical engagement rings with the solid band and 1-3 stones, but it's just not me.  Anyone have any ideas of where to look?  I've been looking all over online, but I'm not having a ton of success.  I really like Cathy Waterman designs.  I live outside of New Orleans, so if anyone has any experience with this part of the country, that would help as well!

Thanks in advance!  I'm soooooo excited! :)

    Do you have a budget?

ETA: If you are having a lot of trouble finding something you love you could look into having a ring custom made. I don't have experience with this but I've heard it's not as expensive as you might think.

Why not visit a local jewler and have something designed for you?

I agree with finding a jeweler that can help you design what you want. BF and I recently found a jeweler that we are going to go to when its time to design our wedding rings. ( Now if he would just give me that e-ring already! lol)

I like the antique jewelry mall site Nik posted.

Check on your local board for jeweler recommendations, use pics from the website, and have a local jeweler do a custom ring for you.

Shop around & keep shopping around.  You know you want to get married and the ring shopping is on the table so take your time & find something you really LOVE.

Check into local jewelers, they usually have larger selections than chain stores.  Local shops will also feature "bridal shows" which bring in designers that they usually carry but the designers bring along a larger selection to look at.  Even if you're not ready to purchase at the time, have the store record the info on the ring & they can order whenever.  We did this with my w-ring.

Oh my gosh!  You guys have been too helpful!  I'll start looking through all of these now, lol!

I'm not sure of the budget, I keep asking, but I'm getting no answers...How much extra does it usually cost to have a ring specially designed?

    Hi Brunte,

What a fun date night!  I know what you mean..I was not all about the center stone but a really cool setting when we went looking.  We talked to a couple local jewelers and it really depends still on the diamond.  For what I wanted with around a 1ct. center we were looking at about $7000 to $9000.  I knew BF didn't want to spend that much so we kept looking.  I ended up finding a ring I loved at the SF Jewelry Mart.  It's not something I would have looked at online and loved but I was trying on EVERYTHING and this one just came to life on my hand.

Definitely take your time looking, try on lots of stuff and get the budget.  I told BF "look I don't want to be picking an $8000 ring and you only want to spend $4000 or whatever so give me a budget to work with and I'll pick something I like that you are comfortable buying"  Finally he gave me a number and the ring I love and he actually really likes too is right on the money.  Happy shopping!!

It depends.  My e-ring wasn't custom designed but I won a redesign of my grandmother's ring she left me when she passed.  It was through a local jeweler & although I don't know the cost of the redesign/customization alone because the appraisal included the stones I already had, I can tell you the specs on the stones & ring and the appraisal price, which includes the price of the custom design in it.

    TCW: 1
Main stone: 0.29 (technically considered 1/3 carat), with small round stones all around.  Click <a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/77079_1461043692079_1413030018_31055626_4846959_n.jpg" target="_blank" title="here">here</a> for a picture.
    Color: D
    Clarity: I1
Marquise cut, I don't recall the quality of cut.

The appraisal was for $4980, so just under $5000.  That does include the custom design aspect of it, to give you an idea.  I hope this helps you to get an idea!
