Men's Watch Suggestions

So, I'm looking to buy my FI a watch. I know nothing. I never wear watches & certainly don't wear men's watches. He doesn't have one, but would like one. So, I've been looking around and found a lot of Invicta watches. (LINK) They have great reviews.

He would like a stainless steel band with black face. Any other reputable brands for under $125?

Re: Men's Watch Suggestions

  • My FI is obsessed with Nixon watches. He has two already, I think I'm getting him another as a wedding gift. I think some of them are around that price, and they have a lot of styles.

  • For under $125 that's good quality we buy Fossil.  If you can catch Citizen on sale you may be able to find a Citizen Eco Drive for around that price.  DH and I both have eco drive watches and love that we never have to replace the battery.

  • Hmm, the Nixon watches are pretty interesting. They have a lot of unconventional designs. The Citizen watches are beautiful! I can't find anything, on sale, that's even close to my price range & fits what he's looking for.

What about Guess? I've never known them to be for watches. Their Silvertone Chronograph watch is exactly what FI is looking for (LINK). I can't find any reviews anywhere.

Buy.com has a lot of watch sales of really nice brands.

ETA: I just read my email and got their daily ad, and they have this watch on sale for $98 from $375, with free shipping.  It's Bulova, stainless steel, black face.

WHOA! I went to the site & the first 'recommendation from my history' was the exact same Invicta watch I was looking at. I've never been on that site, but I guess it somehow draws the info from somewhere. Thanks for the tip!
  • Personally I think Citizen is a much better brand for watches than Guess.

The problem is, even on sale, it's hard to find a Citizen watch I can afford. (unless, of course, I go with another material other than metal)

You're welcome!  I've bought several watches there.  I can't remember the brand of the one I got for my nephew, but I got a Victorinox that's my daily watch for about $30 and a Dolce & Gabbana for $79.  Check out the watch I added to my original post also, it was in their daily email today (I LOVE their daily emails, they often have amazing deals).

Oooh, that one looks nice too!
  • What about these?

Personally I'd do the Bulova over Citizen Eco, but that's mainly because Bulova is highly rated and I'm more familiar with it.  And the retail price is higher - I like to feel like I'm getting a good deal!  :p

I know what you mean on that! I love to say 'I saved $XXX!' although I have a feeling those prices are inflated just so we have this convo.<div>
</div><div>Anyway, this is going to sound silly & superficial to watch people, but I kind of want a watch that has a lot of presense. I know my FI knows nothing about watches & wouldn't know the difference between a Casio and a Citizen. So, although I obviously want to get him something of good quality that will last, I also want it to be kind of big & interesting looking. That's kind of why I was looking at those Guess and Invicta watches. I get more visual bang for my buck. I just have to find that fine line between beauty & durability. </div>
  • My FH is OBSESSED with watches.  I got him a ~$100 Citizen last year for his birthday, and he loves it.

Can you post some of the ones you're thinking about?  I want to shop vicariously.

  • You may be able to get a Fossil for that price and they are good watches.  The Citizen ECO drives (never need batteries) might be available for that but you wouldn't have a lot of selection for $125.   Right now Macy's has almost all Citizen watches on sale at 20% off, if you have a Macy's account and have coupons, they will work on these sale watches (Seiko, Bulova, Caravelle are also on sale and coupons will work on them).

If you don't have a Macy's and open one, you'll get an additional discount (up to $100 off) on it too.

Citizen's carry a 5 year limited warranty but you probably won't need it.   Most other watches are 3 year warranties.

I just spent the holiday season working in Fine Jewelry at Macy's and have sold a LOT of watches in the last few weeks.
  • I will also suggest Fossil. I loved their watches and have gotten H two of them (he "lost" the first one). He loves them.

  • Do you have TJ Maxx or Marshalls around you that sell fine jewlery? Or a Nordstrom Rack? All of those stores will sometimes have great deals on watches and you could totally score something really nice around that price point that usually retails for more. You a thought. Good luck!

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions! I asked my FI yesterday, 'so, what did your last watch look like.' He said, 'oh, I can barely remember. It's been almost 10 years. I LOSE EVERY SINGLE ONE.'  o.O

I almost died. I was almost convincing myself that I was being too cheap & that I should get him a $150-200 watch instead, but after hearing that he lost EVERY single one, I'm sticking with $125 max. He knows that if he loses it, he has to pay!! Here are some of my top picks so far.

Invicta Watch on Amazon $109 (LINK)

Invicta Watch on Amazon $99 (LINK)

Guess Watch at Lord & Taylor $125 (LINK)

Fossil Watch at Macy's $115 (LINK)

    Opinions?
  • I like the first one, it has a very clean, classic look. The other 3 all looked very similar to me. I'm getting FI a watch as a wedding present too, I decided to go with Bulova (it's pricy though) because I love the look of the watch. This is what I got from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Bulova-98D109-Diamond-Accented-Bracelet/dp/B0021AEDSM

OOOh, that one is nice! I actually went to Lord & Taylor to see the Guess watch. I have a $50 gift card there & wanted to use it up. I asked for other watch brands that are not only pretty (like Guess or Michael Kors), but will also last. The lady suggested Skagen watches. The prices were pretty decent. Problem is, absolutely every review I read on Amazon and elsewhere says that the crystal cracks easily. My FI is pretty clumsy, so I don't think that'll work for him!
