GIS meet & greet

Re: GIS meet & greet

  • We (my FI and I) are getting married May 30th (down to 3 months, YAY!!!).  Our whole relationship and engagement has been long distance--he's in TN, I'm in TX.  It's not something I'd reccomend, but through an incredible amount of patience, we're getting through it.  :)  I'll move up to TN after we're married, and we'll see where the wind blows us after that...

I don't have weight goals really (I've dropped quite a bit this last year, and now I fit into my "things-I-haven't-fit-into-for-years" clothes.  But I opted to start working out at the college I work at (free gym membership--oh yeah!) since FI decided to start working out himself to buff up (he's on the trim side...but has gained thirteen pounds of muscle over 4 workouts!?!?!). I'd love to build lean muscle without the bulk (so I still fit the dress) just to be a healthier person.  FI and I have started eating healthier too this past month...I think it helps to have someone you want to live for to encourage you to be at your healthiest.  :)

  • Yeah, I'm late to the thread, but I post pretty regularly, so, a bit about me:

I'm 28, originally from Michigan, living in Arizona for about 9 years. My FI and I met at work, though we both now work elsewhere. We've been together 4 years and our wedding is in July.

I lost 25 pounds on Weight Watchers a few years ago, and managed to keep most of that off, other than gaining a couple pounds during the holidays and then working them back off. I'm back below pre-holiday weight at this point and almost back to my lowest WW weight. Originally wanted to lose about 40 pounds on WW, so now I'm focused on dropping the last 15 before the wedding.

It is helping me this time around to realize how much better I feel when I eat right and exercise. I think I'm finally accepting this as a way of life instead of a means to an end. I still struggle to be consistent, but I keep on trying, and that's the best thing to do, in my opinion.

Thanks to everyone for the ideas, support, advice, and inspiration! :)

  • Hmm...I'm so late with this I wonder if anyone is going to read it...:)

Hi ladies! I'm Melody. I'm in Toronto also! (lots of us around TO on here). I have always had a little extra on me:) and have worked out in spurts for years (bootcamp for 4 weeks then nothing, pilates for 3 weeks, then nothing, etc) and have finally kicked my butt into high gear and joined a gym and made a comittment to make being healthy and fit a regular part of my life. I love spinning classes, bodycombat, lifting and when there's no classes...running on the treadmill. It's a goal of mine to be active at least 4 times a week (so far so good...).Lurking on this board has been such a huge help and reading everyone's posts keeps me going (I'm on here a little more than I'd like to admit...).

Eric and I have been together since highschool and eloped last year while we were living in Texas (just moved back to Toronto after living there for about 2 years). We didn't think we wanted a big wedding (my family is ginormous!) and after a month...decided we wanted a wedding! So yes, working a bit backwards but I couldn't be more excited about our wedding with our friends and fam in June.

So great reading everyone's posts and "meeting" you all! :) That is...if anyone reads this.
  • I'm late to this too but I like the idea so I'm doing it too =-P

I'm Paige, I'm 24 and I'm NEY (not engaged yet!).  BF, Dan, and I have been together for almost 4 years.  We have a beautiful home with our two wonderful pugs in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I've had weight issues my whole life but decided a few years ago that I was going to do something about it.  I joined WW and lost about 60 lbs 2 years ago.  I've gained about 20 back since then but doin' okay.

I discovered this board 2 months ago and since then I've gotten back into high gear.  I'm hoping to lose 80lbs within the next 18 months.  I'm swimming 3-5 times a week (depending on meeting schedules), going on more walks with BF and doing 30DS (it kicks my a$$!!).  I'm starting to see a difference.  My clothes fit different, I've lost 4 lbs and I've lost 2.75 inches in the past month!!

Melody I read your post, and I doubt I'm the only one;) Nice to meet you all!!

  • I think I'm the only guy on this whole site.

I met my fiance about 5 years ago.  We were planning to get married, but then I moved for a job and we were long distance, and then my Dad got sick.  Dad's the strongest man I've ever met in ever sense of the word.  Physically, mentally, spiritually.  He came to this country with nothing and started a family while working two jobs so he could support his brothers and sisters back home.  He put nine of them through college, and also us.  He worked out 3-4 hours a day, every day.  At 76 and 150lbs he could squat over 300lbs, press over 155 overhead and do more than 10 pullups.  Life long martial artist, I used to think he was Batman since he stopped a few robberies while working the graveyard shift.   I remember when he was 70 he laid out a 20 year old kid who was abusing other seniors at the gym.   He passed away a little over a year ago.  In the ER, when they told him he was dying he just looked at our concerned faces and said to me "Did you remember to bring a jacket for your Mother?  Don't worry"  Then threw us a thumbs up, offered to sing us a song and told us things would be ok.

I told him I was planning on proposing the weekend before he passed away.  I proposed the day before his funeral.  Instead of a ring my fiance got my heart and a wet tissue.

When he first got sick, I remember asking him "Dad, how do I be a good father?  How do I raise good kids"  He told me "Just follow my example and do what did with you."

Well, that's why I workout.  Dad taught me the Olympic lifts (snatch, clean and jerk) when I was a kid and I never got really good at them.  I've been decently strong, and like him, I box and wrestle and play judo.  Just not at his level.  To be a good dad, I need to be like him because that's the only way I know how.  To be like him, I need to become more like him.  So I started learning the lifts again.  Now I workout because for me it's like going to church.  We always talked in the gym and that's where we talk still.

I have some goals, like maybe someday being good enough to compete in a national level meet, maybe finally getting my bb in judo, and maybe one day out lifting Dad's best.  But all that's really secondary.  I'm just trying to become the man I've always wanted to be through the only way I know how.
  • whoa..i just found this post..I was out of town last week and didn't see it until now..i'm a little late, but figured I'd still post.
I'm Stacey, 27 originally from Pennsylvania but moved to Dayton/Cincinnati area while i was active duty Air Force for 4 years. I am a registered nurse currently finishing my Masters in Public Health.  FI is John and he proposed to me Last May in front of Cinderella's castle at Walt Disney World in Florida. It was a total shock, and I wasn't expecting it at all. We will be getting married September 25th, 2010 in the church where we met.
My weight loss journey has its ups and downs...I lost a bunch of weight the unhealthy way about 4 years ago and since then have gained it all back plus about 30 pounds. I was treated and since have gotten better for an eating disorder. I've tried losing weight (in a healthy way) for about a year but haven't seen results until  I began Weight Watchers on 11 Jan 10 . So far I've only lost 6 pounds, but at least it's a start. My biggest hurdle is getting the gym. I work full time and go to school and making exercise a priority is difficult. I'm mostly a lurker on GIS board, but i'm active on the WW accountability.
It was great to meet you all and I hope to share some ideas and inspiration! You girls give me motivation to stick to it every day!
    Keep it up ladies!
  • I'm Sarah and I live in the Princeton, New Jersey area.  I'm a cartographer - AKA I work at a computer all day and make maps.  My FI (Paul) is down in DC.  We'll have been together for 4 years in April - got engaged in Sept.

My junior/senior year of college I had some major asthma issues and gained about 40 lbs as a result.  (I went from 102 to 145... not healthy at 5'1".)  Since then, I've lost 25lbs but put 5lbs back on (125lbs now).  I'm now barely back within my healthy BMI levels, but would love to continue to eat better and tone my body.  My healthy BMI minimum says I can go down to like 98 lbs but that doesn't actually seem healthy to me - I'd love to lose just 10-15lbs to be closer to where I started 4+ years ago.

My asthma is the biggest factor in my workouts - there are days when I just have to stop or when I can't work out at the same level I had for days because my asthma is just giving me issues.  I just need to get going and keep going because when I take a day or two off, it can set me back weeks asthma-wise.

Also - Lisa, I know where Hillsborough is!
