Name Change

This one is mostly for the married ladies -
Did any of you girls purchase a kit to help you with changing your name? I found one that is $30 (www.msnowmrs.com) and I can't decide if it is a hoax and I can really just do all this myself and save the money... Or if maybe it really is worth the moolah for the peace of mind...

To-be-married girls - Are any of you using a service for this? Or just going it alone?

TIA =)

    Save your cash!  All those services do is fill in information on the requisitie forms for you - you still need to deliver the forms to the DMV, social security, etc. and you need to bring your marriage license and ID with you.  Changing your name after the wedding really isn't too stressful a process....I had most of the work done within a week of returning form my honeymoon (keep in mind that grad school and the school year also started in that time frame!).  I physically had to go to the DMV and social security, which in total took maybe a half hour each of my time on two separate days.  Filling out the required forms there takes all of two minutes, so spending $30 for an online service to fill out the forms for you (after you have to supply them with all the info anyway!) just isn't worth it.  The rest of my name changes were quick phone calls to places like my credit card company.  Even now, things come up and changing my name is easy (for example, I took Mac to the vet a couple of weeks ago and they just changed my name quickly in the computer there).  No need to spend extra cash.

    I'd be a little nervous about putting this information online, even if it is secure and well reputable.  For me, changing my name at the DMV and the social security office was easy.  The annoying part was changing it on all of my bills and credit cards.  I still haven't changed it with PECO because of the insane forms and ID proof I have to provide.  I don't know if this service would save you any of that headache; if it does somehow, it might be worth it.

    Also, I think you still have to go to the DMV to change your name b/c they issue you a new license with photo, so I do'nt know that this is saving you much time there since you could just fill out the form while you're waiting.

    Thanks Heather, I really appreciate your input!

    A lot of girls on my month board are using those services and so I wanted to ask around. I don't think it will be impossible. Just have to accept filling out the darn forms...

    Save your money - it's not that difficult to change your name.  It's more of a PITA waiting in lines and filling out forms.  I had to go to SS first.  There's a simple form to fill out (you can find it online or at any SS office).  I got my card within a week.  I was able to get a new DL before I received my new SS card - I just had to wait 48 hours for it to update in the system.  This is how I had to do it in MD and I've had some friends in PA/NJ say they had to do it this way too.

    Most other things you can do over the phone.  And like Heather said, things will trickle in and you'll say "oops gotta change that too!"  Bank accts and my passport are the only things I need to take care of soon.

    My cousin's wife just had a baby on Saturday and when we went to see her in the hospital we had to ask for her by her maiden name - she still hadn't swtched her name on her insurance cards (even after 4 years!).  It's not a big deal at all = )

    I went to SS first they gave me a paper to take with me to the DMV so I could change in there right away.
    I did both in one afternoon, took about 3 hours with waiting in line and everything.

    Thanks for the input ladies!! I think I will go ahead and try it on my own... I am off for a few days after we get back from our HM so maybe I can take care of the big ones then...

    Thanks again!

    DIY.  SS office first, then the DMV, then passport.  I was surprised at how easy it was to change my info with the credit card companies.
