buy in right size vs. discounted gown plus alterations

Hi Ladies! A local shop is having a sample sale on Pronovia gowns but the catch is that these gowns range from size 8 to size 14 and I'm a size 0 or 2. Would it be cheaper to buy a gown in my size at full price or buy one on sale and then get it altered?

  • You won't be able to alter it. I wanted a size 12 sample in a dress I couldn't afford new, and I'm also a 0 - they said there was no way they could make it look right - it's a matter of proportions. They would have had to take the dress apart and recut it piece by piece. 2 sizes in either direction is the max they told me they would do.

  • Only go with 2 sizes up if need be, you lose a LOT of detail taking in too much. I bought a dress in the size I wear NOW even though I'm on track to lose the last 20lbs I gained in physical therapy and my grandmother said there is no issues taking in, however it IS easier to take in A-line due to the seam areas. So my dress fits perfect now, will fit perfect if I drop one size (corset) and if I lose  just taken in a little.

  • definitely buy the dress in your size.  The alterations will be so expensive to take it down so many sizes.  Believe me, I work at a bridal salon, and it's really difficult to take a huge dress and make it small.  One or 2 sizes can work, but no more than that.
    good luck!

Also... keep in mind that extensive alteration fees could make that discount dress as expensive as if you had purchased the correct size, but the dress won't look as good as if you bought the properly sized one.
