CN: In an Ohio city, a mother was given a life sentence for cooking her 28-day-old baby in the microwave. PETA wants to "play on" this case, with a billboard showing a person microwaving a porkchop, with a mother pig and piglet also shown, with the phrase "Everybody's somebody's baby. Go vegan."

Killing your baby is not even remotely related to eating a porkchop. EVER.

If that billboard had been created without this case happening or without intending to create any links to an actual human baby, I could see it as OK. But not after that happening to that poor baby.

I'm a vegetarian, but piglet /= baby.

This I could understand and maybe see happening. (Why they'd do this in the Midwest is beyond me, but ok.) I mean, I expect PETA to do controversial and assholish things, but this is waaaaay past controversial into "you are a terrible organization and you don't deserve to have a public voice, everyone hates you."

Ugh, the day the microwave story came out, my local news had all child abuse headlines, every single one. I couldn't even click on the headline, "Woman gets life for microwaving baby". I just totally closed the window altogether and decided I didn't need news that day.

This Peta thing is almost unbelievable. Blech. Getting their attention and media from someone else's tragedy that has nothing to do with them? ... -no words-

I was going to post this last week but I wasn't sure if it was talked about.
It was said in our local paper that she put the baby in for 2 minutes and the baby's temp went above 107. They said she "cooked" the baby.

Sorry I didn't read this article.
but It soo sickening that people are capable of doing this.. AND for all over a fight with the guy of weather or not he was the dad!

I was just telling a friend of mine about this on fb. I said how piglet =/= baby and he said that the crazy thing is, is that many hardcore PETA members do consider them to be equal. That just blows my mind.

I would be interested to see what PETA's spin on this would if the mother who killed her baby was a member of PETA. And yeah, pigs and babies? Not equal. When piglets squeal, it's cute. (Just kidding, I like kids well enough.)

This pisses me off. In addition to capitalizing horribly on a senseless tragedy, the message in general makes vegetarians/vegans look crazy, because reasons to avoid eating meat shouldn't really include "that piglet was somebody's baby." Mama pig certainly does not care about baby pig in the same way that humans care about human babies.

There are lots of legitimate reasons to discuss whether eating meat is right, or healthy, or whether our current practices of factory farming are horribly inethical, cruel to animals, and bad for the environment. There are lots and lots of real debates there that people should have. But what happens with this kind of stupid sensationalism? People just close their ears.

Good points Sarah.

I can respect peoples reasons for being vegan, and I used to try to understand some of PETA's points. I like meat, and will always choose to eat it, however, I do support attempts to make killing the animals as humane as possible within reason.

But I find PETA to be so judgmental to those who dont feel the same way that they do, and cannot respect an organization that pulls stunts like this.

I honestly feel that they took many steps backwards in getting their message across. Bf's father has been a vegan for 30+ years and has tried to get us to at least turn vegetarian. We have been considering changing our lifestyle, but something like this actually makes me think about how eating an animal is nothing compared to hurting a human. Not saying this billboard would convince me to stay omnivore, but it definitely takes some meaning out of the "cause" to me.

And this is why I like people like Michael Pollan better. We humans are omnivores, and in order to figure out what we should be eating, it's best to start from a place of being thoughtful about what being an omnivore has historically meant. There's no room to have a discussion that gets anywhere if the people in one corner are yelling about widdle pig babies and comparing them to humans.

Factory farming? Cow farts contributing to global warming? Turning rainforests into pastureland? Excessive use of antibiotics and the resulting rise of superbugs like MRSA? I'll listen. Bambi's mom? I'm out.
