• Not that I've ever had great difficulty cracking eggs, but that thing looks awesome.
In Response to Re: WTF Target product : Goldfish Care Basics: <a href="http://www.firsttankguide.net/goldfish.php" rel="nofollow">http://www.firsttankguide.net/goldfish.php</a> In a nutshell: No bowls.  They need a 10 gallon tank, a filter, a thermometer and hiding spaces. Again, IMO, it's cruel to buy an animal and not provide it with what it needs to be healthy.
Then you get smaller fish. Fish will only grow as large as the space they are provided with. It's not like those fish in the picture are real.  EDIT: Or a betta. Those guys are used to living in puddles. That would be like a mansion for them.
Posted by salt78
this is a picture of a betta's natural habitat: <a href="http://www.betta-fish-care.net/images/rice_paddy.jpg">http://www.betta-fish-care.net/images/rice_paddy.jpg</a>

how does that compare to a 3" cube????? and in what way does that make it a mansion?????????

people are so misinformed about bettas is makes me crazy. bettas live in shallow rice patties in the summer/dry months. but those patties are MILES long. not quite the same as living in a puddle.

and no, a fish will not grow to the size of it's tank. well it's external size will but it's internal organs will grow until they are the size they should be, and cause premature death and suffering for the fish. but i guess that's ok as long as it looks pretty.

sorry for sounding bitchy but this stuff drives me nuts.

because she believes in properly caring for animals she's obviously an animal wack job huh?
• Um if you are trying to insinuate that I hate animals then you can blow it out your ass. I was simply making the point that there's no need to trip the fuuck out over a couple of tackyass bookends (that I would never own...my own fish at home live in a 10 gallon filtered and heated tank).

But at least it's obvious to me now why no one likes you around here.

I'll be heading to my baby seal skinning meeting now.

The news did a test on tv products and said that it sucked.

I was slightly disappointed.

Man! I always miss the fun days.

I just have to miss because I'm taking my seal-skin collection and having my couch reupholstered.

It's a priority.

• Salt, maybe she can mentor us.
• I'd be happy to mentor.  You can pay me in veal.
• I'm fresh out of veal, but I have some dolphin mean on hand.

Interested?
• Is it tuna-safe?
• I only eat dolphin that isn't tuna safe. I'm not happy until every sea creature possible dies in order for me to have a sandwich.

Salt, I see your point... The bookends are no different than fish bowls. Do you really not see mine, though?  My point is that fish shouldn't be kept in bowls, period.  I'm not getting all up in arms because you had a goldfish in a bowl when you were a kid.  So did I.  But as adults in the 21st century, we have the resources at our fingertips to become more informed about the basic needs of the living animals you bring into your home.

I'm not a member of PETA because I'm not an extremist, but I am an activist for animal rights.  I'm just saying, if you make a decision to buy an animal, then you are taking on the responsibility to provide a healthy environment for that animal.  I don't know why anyone would want to argue with that.

<div>I see the long-winded point, yes, but I don't think that's the real reason you posted about it. Deep down inside I feel like the real reason you posted this was because you thought everyone was going to be all 'OMG call the authorities!' about it since the general consensus is that fish centerpieces are terrible. And then that didn't happen. Sorry your thread fell flat. </div>

Yeah I kind of expected more people to agree with me, and I'm disappointed that only a couple people do.   I'm not disappointed in the turn the thread took, though.  Animal rights is an important issue to me.

<div>I agree with you.  </div><div>
</div><div>I still feel guilty that I bought goldfish and put them in a pretty bowl in college.  It didn't turn out well for them.  Poor guys, they didn't deserve that.  These things are too small for a goldfish or even a Beta.  Even the guy at petsmart told me that a Beta needs at least a gallon (as he sold me a beta in a 16 oz plastic cup).  </div>

• Bubbalub I haven't heard that song in ages!

I, too, can't believe they're $60. They're just glass containers (that could be filled with anything, btw, and I don't think it was really Target's best idea to market them only for fish).

• PETA members don't believe anyone should own pets. In fact, they'd be fine if cats and dogs died off because at least they couldn't be "exploited" for human needs. Crazy fuuckers.

I actually asked my friend last night (who is a former vegan), "Why do most vegans make all vegans look bad? Have you noticed?"

• It is a goldfish bowl. That just has a use. :)
• A klutz like me would prolly knock those things over EVERY time I went to get a book or put one back.

• *step up on the pet store soapbox* Fancy varieties of goldfish need over 20G of water per fish, plus filters and on occasion water chillers (they need water that is less than 70 degrees to really be healthy) then an additional 10G after that. So yeah, bowls are very bad for them. If given space they can live for 20+ years but the average lifespan for a goldfish in a bowl is about 2 years at the very most.

Bettas naturally live in streams, BUT the streams often dry up so they have developed a special breathing apparatus so they can survive periods of drought in very limited water. Having them in bigger tanks won't be instant death, but they can survive in very small amounts of water if it's clean. (Random fact of the night, but a fish called a gourami also has the same breathing method if needed). My friend once had a betta who was out of water for 12 hours and still survived.

I'd be worried about people knocking them over constantly if used as bookends. And yeah, that's expensive for a little betta half bowl.

And for my PetSmart plug, the water in those cups are changed daily per policy and the sell rate is normally less than a week, so that's not as bad as it may initially seem.
