DJ recommendations for Utica, NY

Hi all,

I am getting married in July, 2011, and am looking for DJ recommendations, preferrably from personal experiences if at all possible!

I can not STAND obnoxious DJ's, so relatively low key but fun is my goal. I'm a wedding photographer, so I've seen the range out there... including the endlessly tacky "take the garter off with your teeth" routine. (with apologies to those of you who think that's funny. Innocent)

Thanks very much,

Michelle

    We're getting married at Daniele's on Seneca Turnpike and we're having Ryan Misencik (Performance DJ of Central NY if you Google).  My friend had him a few years ago at her wedding and I had a blast!  Check out his website if you're interested.  I don't know what other DJs do but he gave us a username and password and all our guests can put requests in ahead of time.  Then, we get the final say on what gets played (I thought this was pretty cool).  I would also recommend Scott Carmen (he's a friend of my fiance's but was already booked).  He's usually at Bridal Shows if you go to any local ones.  I hate to be negative, but I can tell you I would not recommend Mark Richards (DJ from Lite 98.7).  My friend had him last summer and none of us were impressed.  He basically blew off her play list and played what he wanted.  Good Luck!

    Thanks for your input!

    Negative or positive is ok with me. If the DJ plays the chicken dance at our reception I'm not paying him/her. lol

    We are getting married at Hotel Utica in July.

    I already heard back from one place, but they are about double what I expected...

    OP,
    I am going with Majestic DJs out of Whitesboro.  It's a husband/wife team and they are very low key and their focus is to stay in the background and let the bride/groom shine. They have a HUGE selection of music.

    Hope this Helps!

    I've had a few quotes from different places, and I have to admit, I was surprised at the cost. Not that I was expecting to pay $100 or anything, but I was really NOT expecting over $500. And a LOT over $500....

    What price ranges are you seeing? (please feel free to PM me if you don't want to post it here!)

    I'm having Michael Erb as my DJ -- have to admit I haven't seen his work, but he has rave reviews & was very well-mannered and musically knowledgeable when we met him.  He's based near Syracuse, but he's coming out past Ithaca for my wedding without travel costs, so I'm sure he does Utica too.

    I have been in this industry for many years as a caterer and have seen some terrible DJ Services - I can tell you this - if your wanting to spend $500 for a DJ then you get what you pay for and you will get low quality and many mistakes, and bad service - typical wedding dj type;
    You should be spending around $1000 for a professional DJ who will make the reception and not break it;
    I used Kevin Colangelo DJs and they are top professionals, have liability insurance and do a fantastic job - I found this link on their website and it shows a video of a DJ at Danielles in New Hartford totallt screwing up the brides day;
    It is the worst I have seen and they are a local DJ in the area but I could not find the name form the video;
    $0 to $500 is going to get you a duff DJ Service - $500- $1000 is going to get you ok to good and above $1000 is going to make your dreams come true and make your wedding;
    Here is that link for the video
