Greek Yogurt?

Hey Ladies,

I see a lot of you writing about greek yogurt.  I've never heard of it...  Is it like regular yogurt?  I'm in Canada...where do you buy it?  Is it good?

Cheers.

Re: Greek Yogurt?

  • It's yummy. It's basically thicker and creamier. I think they strain some of the water out. And as a bonus, it has more calcium than regular yoghurt. I've found it in most grocery stores down here in Florida, but if you are having trouble, I always see it at organic grocery stores, and it showed up there before I saw it on the shelves in normal grocery stores.
  • It takes a little getting used to the flavor, but it's really good!

I find it next to the other yogurts at my grocery store.

  • To me if kinda taste like even more sour sour cream.  I think it would be good used as a sour cream substitute IMO

  • I'm one of those people who can eat/drink something just because its healthier.  I dont usually get hung up on taste.  That said, I like the greek yogurt.  It is a little more like sour cream, but not bad.  I've used it in smoothies and bought the individual cups for work.

Good luck finding it in Canada!

Alright, due to the crazy import fees imposed on dairy products here in the Fantasic White North, greek yogurt isn't a readily available here as it is in the US.

The best (as in closest to the stuff I ate in Greece) that I've been able to find is a new product by Liberte.  It actually says "Greek yorurt" on the container.  At my grocery store it's placed near the sour cream (and in the same 500 g sized container).  number55 and Nebb have found it at Metro in the yogurt section (I think, check down a bit for one of Nebb's posts).

If you've got a Whole Foods near you they might have a different brand too, I forget the name, it started with an Sk though, and came in single portion sizes with fruit or honey in a little thing on the side.

I like to eat my greek yogurt with a bit of honey added in.  When I was in Greece I had it for breakfast most days with a bit of honey and some canned peaches.

  • Fage is usually easy for me to find.  Super Target has even started carrying it.  Greek Gods is also good, they make a variety with honey already in it that is sooo sweet & creamy... it just doesn't come in a 0% option like Fage, so I buy the Fage usually and sweeten it with honey and or Stevia; but have also used it plain as a sour cream substitue.
  • This was in the Food Network magazine a few months ago.  I haven't tried it yet, but it looks pretty simple!  It's how to make your own greek yogurt at home....

"Make your own Greek yogurt: Line a sieve with a coffee filter and set it over a bowl. Place 4 cups plain whole-milk yogurt in the filter and refrigerate for 12 hours (you'll get about 2 cups thick yogurt)."

Love it...I eat a a half a cup twice a day mixed with a 1/4 cup berries (I buy the giant mixed bag at Target) and a sprinkle of raw sliced almonds (from Trader Joe's) each time.  Regular yogurt freaks me out now because of how much sugar is in it....to me it is the nutritional equivalent of a candy bar!  Also greek is super high in protein.  I use it as a sour cream substitute as well when I make burritos at home.
  • Thanks for all your help ladies!
I found Greek Yogurt at my local health food store last night!
I haven't had a full serving but it tastes really yummy just from dipping my finger in it!
Can't wait until it's time to eat breakfast....
    Thanks again!
