The post by aah in Hetshup's interrogation reminded me of a conversation I had with our crazy korean the other day. He asked me what kind of plastic surgery I wanted. It kind of took me by suprise because I had never even thought about plastic surgery.
According to him, plastic surgery is a very common thing in Korea. They mostly have surgeries on the face, and people usually get addicted to it. I equated it to tattoos here in the US, which he agreed with. He said that if you apply to a job in Korea, they strip you down to your underwear and check to see if you have tattoos.
What are your thoughts and feelings towards plastic surgery, tattoos, and the treatment of getting jobs in light of either of these?
Re: Plastic Surgery
I think you can add piercings to that one as well. A guy that I dated had piercings in his forehead. Normally he wore his hair long so you couldn't see them, but if the light caught the metal right it'd catch your attention. He ended up taking them out when we started going to interviews at law firms once he was done law school.

I totally agree that tattoos and plastic surgeries can be addicting. it's like, once you get past the first one, the ones after it can seem like a breeze. And when does it end? There is always something that can be fixed and the surgeons will make sure to point the faults out to you because it'll make them money.
I don't understand why employers would care if potential employees had tattoos they couldn't see. I guess it has to do with a dislike of the subculture or what ever?
... Having said that, pretty much every book I've read so far that takes place in the future involves noticeable tattoos (like on the face0 being totally normal. I can see our future going in that direction.
Unless I was in a horrible accident and my face was inhuman-like, I would never get plastic surgery...God made me this way for a reason and I'm happy with the way I look.
I think it's extreme to strip down to find tattoos, if they aren't visible while wearing clothes, who cares?
Life is good today.
In the end, I probably will not get a nose job because it does fit my face and it fits me very well. I am so lucky to have a guy who tells me everyday how beautiful I am and how much he loves me exactly for who I am.
I do plan on getting a boob job though. Ha.
For now, plastic surgery is not something I can imagine wanting. I hope that I can appreciate looking my age throughout my life. With that being said, I have no idea how I will feel later in life about it. (I don't really think you can know in your 20's if you'll want to change anything in your 40's or 50's.) I am not against anyone having surgery, but I would hope that they have really taken the time to make sure it's the right decision for themselves and also to research the procedure, side effects and complications before hand.
I don't feel anyone should be judged on their outward appearance for any reason when they apply for a job. However, let's be realistic here. People pass judgement all of the time. There is no way to know what characteristics people will judge you by (tattoos, plastic surgery or otherwise). Hopefully if you are true to yourself, people will want to hire you because of your confidence and strong self identity.
As for plastic surgery, I really want facial liposuction someday (soon!). I have a fat face from a combination of genetics and medical steriod use at a young age. I hate my double chin and huge cheeks.
I feel that it is understandable for companies to be selective based on looks, but I think that is mostly because they also want to portray a good image to customers. Although I do feel that if its out of sight it shouldn't be an issue.
With the plastic surgery, I feel that if it would drastically change your comfort level or some self esteem issues then it is understandable, but just for fun seems a little much. I guess thats where the different cultures come in.
When you really start to think about it, plastic surgery and making your body look better should be what people gravitate towards instead of adding ink to it.
Thanks for all of your replies. I really just wanted to get a broader scope of how other people felt about it.
As for plastic surgery, if someone was like, "Hey, you won plastic surgery! What do you want?" I'd take lipo on the neck, tummy, arms, and thighs. I'd have a boob job. Oh, and I'd definitely get botox.
Of those things, the only thing I would probably seek out would be botox...and that's just because I'm a little weirded out about developing my very first "worry wrinkle".
Plastic surgery is something I might consider. I don't want anything drastic; just a small nose job. My nose doesn't look very big from the front, but it's definitely easy to see in profile. I feel like it's very distracting in any photo where I'm turned to the side, and I think it takes away from the rest of the photo. Also, noses only get bigger as people get older. I'm super scared of medical related things, so I'm not sure I would ever go through with it, even if I had the money.
As far as tattoos I also agree that unless they are exposed during the job, you should not be discriminated against because you have them. I can't believe in Korea they strip you down to check, wow!
I am 63 inches tall and my chest was 53 inches around, so I had breast reduction surgery 10 years ago in Jan. I would do it over again in a heartbeat. It helped with my career being on my feet all the time and helped with my barely there self esteem issues. (The last thing I want/need is people staring at me).
Tattoos...I have 8. Some are visible (top of my feet and wrist) but they're not offensive at all. I will admit, being in education, I get a side eye from a LOT of people. I don't get it at all. I am a very well educated person who happens to be artistic and likes to showcase it. I do plan on getting more, but I will keep in mind my career choice and keep them low key.
I got implants about three years ago. I did my best to keep my employers from knowing about it.
(I worked two jobs, an office job and a bartending job.) The bartending job knew because I had to take off longer there, and I came back with lifting restrictions. Office did not know.
Those hiring practices sound horrible.
I have no tattoos, but I want one. I want it on my back, it will be hidden by normal clothing.
