Flame Free Friday

Re: Flame Free Friday

I would rather have cash or gift cards, mainly cash, than anything on my registry for showers and wedding gifts.

We only registered because it's not proper to ask for cash. I literally just said "Hey, FI, that looks cool, point the gun and shoot"

But really, all the CRAP we get is going to sit in a storage unit for the next year, not being used. That is, the stuff we don't take back. Sealed

I am really sick of the Mel Gibson crap going on.  I can't turn on the radio, TV or the internet without seeing/hearing about it.  And yet, here I am bringing it up myself.

ETA: I am deleting my post bc I didn't want to register in the first place but it's not worth griping over.

Natalie - I agree... We've been living together for 4 years now... we really have alomst everything we need/want.  But, I am going to register for some upgraded items, and try the whole "word of mouth" thing about our preference.

So we got our second RSVP. Of course it had to be someone that I would have prefered not to attend.

And futhermore, I hate the idea of wedding/bridal showers. I love the idea of all my female family and friends getting together and celebrating and whatnot before the wedding, and cake is always welcome :) I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone and some of my friends meeting my family.

But, I don't like the idea it all has to be revolved around gifts. I just want to spend time with everyone!

I have to go to dinner with my father and his crazy wife (not my mom) tonight and I REALLY don't want to.  I don't have a relationship with my father really, he is trying to create one but I'm 30 years old and I have my step-dad who has really been the father figure to me and I'm okay with that.  I just hate that he wants to meet my FI and I'm so scared he is going to start down this marriage advice road that I do not want to go down.  It is not a good use of our time since he has been married 4 times and his current wife is a complete psycho and he knows I don't like her and she knows I don't like her.  So why is she coming to dinner??  And the other thing is that I can't drink in front of them because they are both recovering alcoholics so I would feel weird drinking in front of them at dinner.  Ugh...shoot me.

I did a honeymoon registry and I don't regret it one bit.

The first thing I thought when I got offered the job was, "I can't wait to walk right into work tomorrow morning and say, 'Next Friday is my last day'".  My IL's are shocked that I'm not giving an actual 2 weeks notice.  I'm sorry but I've got crap to get ready before new teacher training starts and I deserve a little break!  And actually, I'm NOT sorry.  I feel freaking great!

I don't understand why people are against honeymoon registries.  If it is what the bride and groom want, then it shouldn't matter.  I get that it's not for everyone, but at the same time, registering for $100 silver-plated knives isn't my thing either and that's considered more normal.

Mariah, you're going to be a music teacher right?  We didn't have music teachers until 6th grade at my school, so I'm kind of curious what you'll be teaching.  Do you teach music to everyone in that particular grade?  Or just kids that want to learn it?  And do they get to play instruments, or just learn how to read the notes and rhythms?  I was a flute player for 7 years, so all of this is very interesting to me.  :)

Posted by steph13055
Steph, I'm teaching k-5.  And I see everyone in the school.  So it goes by classes.  They'll learn how to play instruments.  Recorders, tamburines, bongos, maybe some piano, xylophones, etc.  They'll start with simple rhythms and silly songs when they're young and the older they get the more I'll introduce.  Like second grade I'll introduce the quarter note and half note...3rd grade is probably when the smaller instruments will be really introduced.  Kindergartners will get to play very, very simple beats on the xylophone but not to the extent of a 2nd grade or 3rd grader.  4th and 5th grade will be more singing and reading notes and choir stuff.

Thank you for bringing back one of my fondest memories of grade school! I loved when we got a recorder and learned to play simple songs. (Yay Hot Cross Buns!)

Hmm I wonder if I still have my recorder somewhere...

Posted by ezzyv
Aw!  I'm glad you loved recorder!  I mentioned in my interview about how much my students (when I was student teaching) LOVED recorder days.  So I know for a fact I'll want to try that out with the kids because it was so much fun.

Music was my favorite class in elementary school!!  I remember singing all the music from the Lion King.  That was "cool" at the time.  =)

My only memory of elementary school music class is watching "The Sound of Music" and telling the teacher I had to leave class to throw up, then barfing in the doorway when everyone was watching.  :(

I feel kind of lame posting on a wedding board more than a year after i've been married. Whenever I mention the knot to my IRL friends they give me a funny face and ask why on earth I'm on a wedding board.

I feel like a horrible daughter!  My mom is going through so much with my step dad and his cancer right now and all I ever think about the wedding.  She offers to help with stuff and I take her up on it.  I think she is just doing it to be poliet but now I feel bad because she already has enough going on and me just adding to it doesn't help her out at all.  She broke down today when she was talking to one of my BM and said she is at her breaking point and just doesn't know what to do anymore.  I do everything I can to help but with traffic and all it takes about an hour to get to their house and when we have FI daughter its hard to go over there during the week.  I guess I just need to tell FI that he and his daughter are on their own a few days a week and just go over there for a few night a week.  There isn't anything I can actually do but maybe just being there will help.

Sorry not sure what the point of this was but it just hit me really hard and I needed to get it out there!

Tanning Places annoy me.   Why on earth would I want to buy your overpriced lotion?  I'm not even talking about tanning lotion, I'm talking about lotions for VersaSpa.   ...and seriously, NO MEANS NO!!

It's not a difficult thing to exfoliate with a loofah before you go, and using almost ANY kind of lotion afterwards extends the life of your tan...why would I want your $30 bottle?  I'm not stupid lady.

Tiffany-- I was getting a Versaspa last week and the lady at the counter sold a customer a bottle of lotion for $107!! AND she said that was a $70 savings for her being some gold customer or whatever. WTF.
Those tanning salon products are insane.
I was dumb when I was younger and was coerced into buying a $70 bottle of lotion. Ridiculous!!

Cheryl - me too.  I used to spend $50+ on tanning lotion all the time... in addition to paying too much for tanning in the first place.  It's really insane.

I (stupidly) put my account on inactive last year and they charge $5/month so I now have $60 in credits I'm using up so I can just go ahead and cancel it.   I will never have a tanning membership ever again.  I'll just take a coupon and go buy one Versa if I ever need to... or airbrush.
• edited December 2011
Yeah, I'm not down with tanning memberships anymore. I've grown much more aware of skin cancer in the last few years and I don't want to put myself at risk for vanity. I'm actually having some moles looked at in a couple of weeks (scary!!).
I've also noticed how old girls look that over-tan. It's just too much skin damage, so I just fake it now with sprays and lotions.

I do like the "tan accelerator" for Versaspa.  I was always blotchy when I did it before I started using it but now I never am.

I don't know why anyone would step foot inside a tanning bed in this day and age.  Seriously.  I thank my lucky stars I hated tanning when I was a teenager.
• edited December 2011
Stephie, I don't get it either!  I kind of understand it when younger kids do it.  The girls in high school or right in college...but when I turned 20 I stopped tanning because I was like, "Wait.  I'm fair skinned.  The tans I get don't last and I usually burn.  This is not good for me" so I stopped.  I avoid the sun or long exposure as much as possible.  I want people to think I'm 30 when I'm 50, not the other way around!  My BIL's girlfriend is like that...she tans and lays out all the time and she's very fair skinned.  I hope she wakes up one day and realizes that it's not worth it.
