How many months before your wedding do you send out save the date cards?

If you are not having a destination wedding that is far away, how many months before you get married do you send out the save the date cards?  We are getting married on June 4th 2011.

A holiday weekend destination wedding? I would send them out anytime in the next 3 months.

STD's are typically sent 8-12 months before the wedding.. I'd go with 8 months

6 - 9 months for most weddings. Up to 12 months for a holiday weekend. No more than that, or you'll end up with people being confused about which year.

So glad I found this post! I was starting to panic as to when to send out our save the dates since we still have to get our engagement pics taken (I want to use a pic on them). For our wedding everyone has to travel 2-4 hours (his family lives in Southern part of state, mine lives in Northern part, and the wedding is in central part), so I didn't know if I had to send them out sooner because of that. Knowing that I have until September makes me feel a little more relieved.
