NWR: 11 year old boy - gift ideas

what's a good gift for an 11 year old boy?  this particular boy is not "worldly" in that he doesnt really watch TV, and he is homeschooled and therefore isnt exposed to the latest gadgets and gizmos.  (please, no snarky remarks on homeschooling, i know  many agree/disagree with it).  i'm really just trying to think of something to get this kid.  ive asked him what he'd like and he cant think of anything.

    Sports stuff is always good if he is into that.

    Maybe ask his mom if there is a good book you can get him.

    If he is into a specific subject.. try to get something like science kits

    When is the gift being given?.. if in a few months.. I always recommend sleds for winter gifts.

    I have no clue.. this is the best I could come up with.

    no, harry potter isnt allowed.  he's pretty sheltered - im sure he's never even heard of harry potter.

    sleds are great, but tehy dont live in an area where it snows much, if at all. 

    i need to order somethign soon... funny, as a kid, i never liked books as gifts, but i was "worldly".  maybe he'd view a book differently.

    The Eragon books were popular in my 5th grade class.

    EDIT:  What about a simple telescope and a book about constellations?

    Movies?

    When my nephew was 11 for his birthday we got him one of those Air Hogs, the remote flying helicoptors.. But it might not have been the best gift because he tormented his sister with it for about a week straight..

    But he loved it!

    i like the telescope idea... that's really good.  thanks!

    i actually got him an air hog one year (or somethign similar) but he crashed it and broke the wings adn the replacemetn wings (choppers?) that came with it, and then that was the end of the fun.

    Is there a toy store anywhere nearby where you can peruse the 'educational' section.  I'd think an 11 year old boy would be impressed with some kind of robotic or otherwise science-y toy.

    TV was permitted in my house but books were and are still my fave thing in the world.  And if they don't watch TV it is definately something he would be encouraged to do.  Check out the Newberry Award winning books and see if any of those meet Mom's approval.  The Percy Jackson books are good, they are magical but also kinda historical because they are based on Greek Mythology.  His mom might be ok with that.

    $30-$40 is good.
    i found some telescopes in that range on amazon....looking now.  ive thought about a chemistry kit too, but are they messy?

    Do you have a good "hands-on" museum nearby? I'm thinking like Central Ohio Science & Industry (COSI in Columbus or the Great Lakes Science Museum in Cleveland. Both are really fun for all ages and are very "hands-on".

    What about the Narnia series? They are a great book series that have Christian based values and morals. And you can get the entire box set for like 45 bucks?
