Moving to Michigan!

Hi Michigan Knotties- I'm a Rhode Island bride-to-be moving to the Ann Arbor area after my wedding (in less than 2 months!)-  Besides saying hi, I'm writing with a name change question...

Any ideas on how to handle a name change AND a state change?  Has anyone attempted this?  Is there a way to streamline the process?  Do I have to change my name in my home state (RI) first, and then apply for a new license in MI?

    I live in FL & had to do a name change & a state change (from MI to FL)... the name change goes through Social Security. Just make sure when you go to the DMV, you have all of the documentation from SS with your name change. The guy who was doing mine didn't realize that my old id & the SS papers had different names and just went off of my old id so then he had to re-do everything (I even mentioned to him 3 times that they were different names!) Make sure you call or check online first before you go to the DMV to make sure you have all of the documents you will need. I had to go back 3 times because people were giving me the wrong information!

    It's not the DMV here, it's the Secretary of State (SOS).  After you go to the social security office, you should be able to just change your name in MI as you would in RI.

    This website will show you want documents you will need.  http://www.michigan.gov/sos One thing I'll mention is if you are transferring a car registration make sure you bring EVERYTHING with you including any liens or lien releases.  That caused us a major headache and running home twice when FI changed his residency.

    My sister moved to Arizona about 2 weeks after her wedding and she waited til she moved to change her name.  She didn't want to worry about any confusion regarding ID, plane tickets, etc. so she waited until everything with the move was settled before she legally changed her name.

    No idea about the name change thing but welcome new Ann Arbor-ite!
