Re: Opinions-Assisted Suicide

  • Eh, if you want to die, it's your right to do so. I understand "first do no harm" but it seems to me that in terminally ill cases people can be in pain for years. That seems far more harmful, both physically and emotionally. I guess my opinion is that I'm indifferent and it should be a personal choice, like abortion, if the doctor is willing.

  • My opinion: I wish that my government would also rule in favour of such a law. I believe with the right regulation in terms of ensuring that it is utilised only for palliative care patients who are able to voice a desire to die and to provide informed consent, assisted suicide should be legal.

  • I have zero moral qualms with a doctor helping someone commit suicide. By the same token, doctors should be able to reserve the right to not perform procedures they have moral problems with.  Do doctors have that right, I really don't know?

  • I'm down.

As long as the person is of sound mind when they make the decision and are sure about it, go for it.
  • All for it over here. It's my party I can die when I want to.
  • i'm for it. i'd hate to die a slow and painful death.
  • For it, damn it.

  • I'm all for it. I reeallllly wish someone would tell me I'd have to die a slow and painful death rather than saying goodbye on my own terms.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

This is where the red tape gets involved. We talked about this in a class in nursing school--how to define a sound mind. If someone is wracked with pain beyond belief and they're depressed about their illness, are they really of sound mind to want to die? Would they make that decision if they weren't in that situation? (like with an advanced directive). It's incredibly, incredibly hard to get something like this regulated for all those reasons and more--power of atourneys, who decides what and when and what are the motivations...lots of stickiness.

That said, I wish it could be so simple. I'm all for pulling the plug when it's a lost cause and for people deciding to take their own lives, but as a medical professional...I can't do it and I can't see medical-ethics wise how a practitioner could do that. This is purely from practicality perspective--emotionally I'd agree with it.

  • I agree with it. Its better then having famiy members help and then them going to jail for it
