Earlier this week, a student in one of my classes asked the prof, "Do you pay attention to spelling and grammar?"

The prof looked at him and said, "Yes. This is a writing-intensive class. You're in college. You have presumably completed all of your general education writing classes. These are skills you should already possess. Why in the world would the college require you take countless writing classes if they don't ever expect you to use that knowledge?"

I love that.

Fi was a physics major and his capstone class had one requirement: A 30 page research paper. He's actually a very good writer for the most part, but I did edit and find plenty of ways to make it better and to correct an old habit of his to put commas in "whereever they feel right" I guess he was bragging about his awesome girlfiriend to the other students in the class -- there were only like 10 of them -- and I ended up editing several other papers too (for some good cash!).

My major was Journalism with an emphasis in Magazine Editing; it's what I do, but a lot of these guys didn't have a strong background in that, hadn't written many papers and had <em>no</em> idea where to start. I thought that was a real disservice to them to only have one class at the end of four years for writing an academic paper -- that's something many of them would be doing when they got into research or academia!

My neighbor has been running his fucking generator since 7 this morning. Routine maintenance does not require he run it for that long, and it's super loud. It sounds like there's a semi truck parked outside my window.
