XP - Proactive

I've been thinking of trying Proactive, as I've always had breakout problems and in the past month or so it's gotten really bad. I also conveniently just received a promo for the Cleanser, Toner, Repairing Treatment and Refining Mask for $20.
Does this product work as well as they say? Or at least worth $20 to try it? Is the company good about canceling if I don't want to continue using it after 30 days or do they try to steal all your money and make it difficult to cancel future orders?

Re: XP - Proactive

  • I know it works for some people but it did nothing for me.
Recently I went to the derm got some stuff that helped but not 100% then I switched to bareminerals make up and my skin instantly got 99% better. I still get an occasional problem spot but its so so much better.
  • Hmm. My friend swears by it, but I don't know how they are as far as money-back guarantees go. She never had to return it because it worked like a charm for her. I bought the refining mask on its own just for spot treatments, and to me, it was a $30 tube of cream that does diddy effing squat. Maybe it needs to be used with the entire product line, but on its own...well...not so much.
  • Watch your pillow cases...the cream used to bleach mine!

It worked for me but only for a while...I had very stubborn skin problems and it didn't clear until I used Accutane (but my skin was bad enough for Accutane...and nothing else had worked!)...
  • I started it and it didn't work for me.  Then I couldn't get them to cancel my service.  8 months later and 8 charges later to my credit card they finally got the message to cancel my service.  I do not recommend using it at all.  I'm now on prescription medicated scrubs.
  • Ugh, yes, everything we use bleaches all our pillowcases and towels. It really, really sucks.
  • Cher, that's what I'm worried about. For $20 bucks I don't care about getting my money back, but I don't want to be paying for it for the next year.

I need to go to the dermotologist soonish to get all my spots checked out, maybe I'll ask them about face products while I'm in there.

I was calling them almost every 3 days for them to cancel.  They didn't stop till I got mean.  I'd ask your dermatologist for something.  I use a scrub based on sulfur and then two creams Retin-A micro and Benza Clin gel.
  • I used it for a year, and can't even tell you how many towels I ruined before I finally clued in and starting buying all white towels.. Anyway, it did NOT work for me.. at all. I kept on using it for a year, hoping it would work, and it didn't.

I now use Clinique's acne treatment system and could not be happier!

I've never used it but I also heard they're turds about not cancelling your subscription when you call them. I use Burt's Bees garden tomato products and their roll-on blemish stick and Neutrogena's sensitive skin moisturizer. My face cleared up pretty much as soon as I stopped using a bunch of products with artificial dyes and fragrances and stuff, it was amazing. I'm a total natural products/no dyes and fragrances convert.

  • I used to use Proactive and I absolutely LOVED it.  I had really bad skin in my early / mid twenties and this was seriously the only thing that cleared it up.  I would recommend it to anyone.  I agree with that mentioned the towels though, it kills your towels.  and the necklines of your sleep shirts.

I know here in our city they have Proactive dispenser kiosks in our mall.  Maybe your area has something like that, so you could try it without getting sucked into the whole canceling vortex?

  • i have very sensitive skin, and i've heard that proactive won't work for sensitive skin. my sister attempted to use it for a few months, but it dried her out so badly. i agree with the PP who said that the only thing that magically worked to clear up my breakouts was switching to powder mineral makeups like bare minerals. it worked VERY quickly.
  • I can get on board the mineral makeup train too.  I started using bare minerals a few months back and my skin looks amazing.

  • oh yeah, i forgot to say that my other sister uses proactiv and swears by it. she doesn't have sensitive skin, though.
  • I tried the trial $20 thing and it didn't work any better than the Mary kay face wash I had been using and it was more expensive so I returned it and got my money back and subscription canceled. Keep in mind the $20 is a first time only then you pay like twice that every month.  They send you a to month supply but charge you every month even the month you don't get anything from them and I didn't like that... I don't know why I didn't but it bothered me. lol weird I know.  Also it dyed all my washcloths too, I never had the shirt or pillow case problems but I didn't use it very long.
  • It didn't work for me. But I think different things work for different people. I can't even tell how much money I've spent on acne products and the one thing that works for me is Clearasil Ultra. I am making an appointment with a derm. though.

  • I had the same results as East.  I recommend getting it from the kiosk in the mall because it is a PITA to cancel the mail order, and they set you up on auto-delivery of the entire kits and you end up with way more than you need.  Make sure you use a good moisturizer with SPF because it will dry you out and make you sensitive to sunlight.  I use Aveeno Ultra-Calming with SPF 15.

I quit using it because I found a mix of similar products that are cheaper--I'm using Mary Kay Timewise face wash (the toner is supposedly built in), and I'm using benzyl peroxide cream from Acne.org (it's exactly the same as the ProActiv cream but it's cheaper and comes in a huge bottle).
  • You can get it on Amazon too.

  • I have been using it for over a year, and it works really well for me.

I buy it at the kiosk in the mall, so I have never even had to think about subscription issues.

Proactiv doesn't stain my towels/pillow cases, but I used something called PurePerfection (it is essentially the exact same stuff as Proactiv) and when I was using that brand it stained EVERYTHING even the neck area of my sleeping t-shirts. I don't even know how the hell it reached my t-shirt, but it happened.

  • Yeah, Mr. Heels uses Clearisil and he screws up all of his shirts with it.  I think it's pretty much anything with benzyl peroxide in it, which unfortunately is the most effective non-prescription treatment for acne.
  • I used to use it but it never worked. I now discovered Zapzyt. It is a little tube of cream that you can get at Walmart. It is the only thing that has ever worked for me and it is inexpensive!  It clears up my zits pretty quickly and reduces the red. My brother had bad acne, too, and his skin now looks great after using it!

benzoyl peroxide really irritates and inflames my skin. so i probably wouldn't be a good candidate for ProActive if i ever wanted to try it. sad.
