  Am I missing something, what are the 'obvious ettiquette reasons' for saying no to his date ?
  
  Possibly the fact that he is asking the OP if he can bring a date when he wasn't invited with one?

  A lot of people believe that the WP should always be given dates, but I don't believe that it's an actual rule per the etiquette authorities.  (Perhaps somebody has a cite?)
  
  Regardless, even if you should have extended the option, it's still rude of him to seek out an invitation that was not extended.

  Yea, I don't know if I've ever heard of this rule as well.  We just didn't give him a plus 1 because when we sent out invites, he was not in a relationship.
