October 2012 Weddings

Check and Vent!

Had the meeting with the priest tonight at the church. Overall it went pretty good. We were late due to a mixup with what time the meeting was supposed to start but he was very good about it. The whole lapsed-catholic thing is a nonissue and we didnt even discuss any really personal topics. The only downside to the whole thing is he said we must have live musicians to play music. UGH! I was hoping to just use my ipod since a) it's free and b) I have my heart set on a string piece to walk down the aisle to. OK fine whatever. So I contact the ONLY string quartet in my city, they're already booked for the day of my wedding. UGH! UGH! So now I have to pay for music that I won't even like.

  • Seriously?!? What's the reasoning behind the live music mandate? I know the Catholic Church dictates that the music must be sacred, but I never heard that it had to be live?! That stinks that your only option is booked : (

  • Does the church have an organist that you could ask to play for you? i know its not a string quartet but it may be cheaper than finding someone to play for you...
I am have the organist of the church play our wedding and then a friend play the violin and sing.
For my sister's wedding, she also had the organist play and then just asked one of the church choir members to be her singer (she happened to be a substitute teacher in the bldg she worked in....)

idk just options, good luck finding someone!
  • Just to throw another idea out there, is there any nearby college or music school?  They might have some recommendation of students or graduates who could play for your wedding.

I'm curious, did he have a reason why they require a live musician?  I understand some venues' rules are there to not destroy their property or whatever, but I don't see the logic behind this rule.
  • No he never gave a reason. And it's not a Catholic requirement to have live musicians as I've been to several weddings where the music was recorded and played over the sound system. I'm going to email him and ask why it has to be a live musician. I hate the sound of organs and I really want the song I've picked out to walk down the aisle to :(

  • Ditto PP--check and see if there's a college nearby.  Or even if there are some high-level high school groups.  I'm a cellist, so I'm slightly biased--live music is important!! :):)

<div>I'm with you on that one.  I just think that the organ sounds so depressing LOL  I'd be really bummed if I had to have organ music at my wedding : /</div>
