I am researching rings for Fi right now and I can't for the life of me remember the different types of metals that are options for rings and which ones might be best for him. He's an architect and works on the computer most of the time, but he is a total car tard and works non-stop on his car, so I'm trying to find a ring that would be "man pretty" for him, but durable at the same time so it won't get scratched so easily while he does his car thing.

What type of ring did you get your DH (metal wise) and why?

He got a titanium one because he liked how light it was and it was cheap and it just ended up being the one he wanted. I wouldn't recommend that for your H, though, because it does scratch and the scratches can't be buffed out.

H's ring is tungsten. No real reason, other than it's inexpensive and he liked the way it looked better than anything else he'd looked at. This is his, but IRL, it's more gunmetal colored than white gold-y looking.

ETA: we got it from tungstenworld.com, and the have a really awesome return policy/warranty. Since tungsten can't be sized, they'll replace H's ring if his fingers get fatter or skinnier, so that's cool. Website also says their rings are "permanently polished" which apparently means they don't scratch easily. H will probably never put it to the test, so I can't reliably say anything about that, but the website advertises it.

H's ring is Tungsten... one of the stronger metals we found available. His day job is construction, and he likes building stuff, working on stuff, using his hands, cutting down trees, all kinds of fun things. So we wanted something that could withstand his abuse.

The plus about Tungsten - from what the jeweler told us, it's pretty much resistant to anything. She tried to scratch it with a diamond and nothing appeared (even a quick glance through a microscope).

The down side - the ring can't be resized because of this particular type of metal. BUT the manufacturer that our jeweler uses will replace it for free as many time as we need FOR LIFE - so if H gains or loses weight or whatever, we can literally just trade it in and get a brand new one.

H's ring is cobalt. It is lightweight, scratch resistant (not scratch proof) and can be cut to be removed if necessary (unlike Tungsten where they have to break your finger or something).

If your H gets injured with a titanium or tungsten ring, it is possible they'd have to amputate the finger, true story.

FI is getting a white gold/rose gold alloy band. It's brushed so it doesn't show scratches, and you can apparently clean it up with a little bit of steel wool if you need to! I'll have to do a little research to see if I can find what the exact name for it is.

The only issue with tungsten is if an accident occurs, there is no way to cut through the ring. The finger HAS to be severed.

Yup, and this is why H doesn't wear his at work. He has a little sleeve he tucks it in to when he gets to work and locks it in his car, then puts it back on when he's on his way home.

As tungsten rings are very hard, it becomes difficult to cut them off from the finger during emergency situations. Some people believe that removing tungsten rings from the finger is impossible and one would have to cut the finger off to do so. This is absolutely untrue and though it can be difficult to cut off this jewelry like the others, tungsten rings can be broken with special tools and devices.

But if you are somewhere without a special tool or device?

You can break a tungsten ring, you just can't cut it with the usual tools. Tungsten is quite brittle, so it shatters if hit with the proper force. This is how lightbulbs go dead. The tungsten snaps. They don't have to amputate the finger 100% of the time. Come on now.

DH has a tungsten carbide ring. It's plan band with rounded edges, and it's a lot lighter in color than a lot of them you see, which is why he chose it. It was from Jared.

I just did some Googling and apparently they do NOT have to cut off your finger, it's not THAT difficult to remove.

My mom is an occupational therapist who specializes in hands and has seen this happen. I asked our jeweler about it, and he was like "You would not believe the number of times I have gotten calls from hospitals asking for help." If the situation isn't life or death, it can possibly be taken off. But if it's severe trauma where the patient can't leave the hospital, they will cut off your finger if they have to.

I've also been told stories of tungsten rings saving people's fingers/hands, say if someone's hand was caught in a press or machine in a factory... some rings/metals would crush the hand whereas the tungsten could hold up.

Ditto. I searched and the first 10 hits I got said it was entirely possible to remove the ring. I'm not saying it doesn't happen ever, but I do believe it's highly unlikely that if H is in an accident they're going to cut off his finger because he has the hardest wedding band EVAR. That just doesn't seem very plausible now does it?

We thought about platinum or paladium to match my ring, but he ended up getting white gold. He's not in love with the prospect of having to get it re-dipped at some point, but so far, so good. I will say, though, he doesn't work on cars and is frankly not that handy. He wanted a precious metal (so not titanium or tungsten) and he wanted a white metal, so there you go.

You don't need a special tool, you can apply pressure in a certain way to shatter it.

And come on now, what are the odds that you're going to hurt your ring finger specifically SO severely that you can't take your ring off before your finger swells? I personally have never met someone who had to have their rings cut off, let alone a finger. (And I've personally had to ahvea my CLOTHES cut off before, but not jewelry.)

This isn't true. The ring can be cut with specific tool that hospitals are equipped with. It just can't be resized.

However, your FI shouldn't wear any metal working on his car for safety reasons. J never wears his to work. Too much chance for conductivity, catching on things, etc.

Most tungsten rings also have a built in spot where it will break when you apply the right force to make removal easier. It's also why you shouldn't drop them on the floor.

When we contacted our local hospital emergency room and asked if they were equipped to remove tungsten wedding bands in an emergency, they told us that most hospital emergency rooms are prepared to handle almost anything, and assured us that it would be no problem for them.

I was contemplating white gold actually, with a satin finish to hide scratches just in case? He doesn't want to get the matching ring that matches my set because he says it's too expensive (bless his heart). Sooo here. PIP. Thoughts?

Gusy, the tungsten doesn't require your finger to be amputated. They are not smash proof. There is a pressure point in the ring that the doctor can hit and it will shatter. If you drop it perfectly on the tile floor and it hits that point, it will shatter.
